looks to me like he whited out the plate for privacy reasons  but the damage around the plate, 'pat on the back' for whoever did it.

I had same problem i removed back door cover and found screw posts I used epoxy to glue them back
let it dry for 24hrs before I assembled again
Still solid

Mine has been loose for years, prolly since I bought it. Sounds like bochard has the right idea. I was quoted $450.00 for a new one at the stealership. Mine is black, and I wanted one with the chrome on top. I'll trade ya!
Were they trying to steal a vanity plate? What'd you put on it?  That didn't happen in your home town did it?

i did the same ,works great now ! just have to remove the inside rear pannel to get access , not to hard easy after you do it once.

you can also find them on ebay for a few bucks if you need a new one.

I've had one replaced, but have never actually looked at repairing one. I would imagine that some good plastic fusion glue would do the trick.
