Stacy boys doing well after accident

Star Tribune
Published May 9, 2005

The two boys who were struck by a Hummer H2 vehicle while riding their bikes near Stacy, Minn., on Sunday are recovering rapidly and likely headed home from the hospital soon.

Charges are pending against the Hummer's driver, a man from Stacy area.

Lt. Steve Pouti of the Chisago County Sheriff's Office said Monday that the 13-year-old boy, who was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul after the accident, is up and playing video games.

Authorities have said he could be released in the next day or so.

The 11-year-old boy, who was taken to Fairview Lakes Regional Medical Center in Wyoming, Minn., was treated for minor injuries, Pouti said. He declined to name the boys or be more specific about their injuries. Fairview Lakes did not have a condition report immediately available on the 11-year-old.

Both boys are from the Stacy area, Pouti said, and "their recovery is going very well." The two were crossing Chisago County Road 19 at 2:43 p.m. They were struck when the driver of the Hummer turned north from County 19 onto Chisago County Road 30.

Pouti said the Hummer's bulk and design was not a contributing factor in this accident, though the 13-year-old boy was airlifted out of concerns he had been hit by such a large vehicle.

Pouti declined to be more specific about possible charges against the driver. He said alcohol or other controlled substances are not suspected. The man, whose identity was not released because he has not been charged yet, was not taken into custody.

Pouti said accidents involving Hummers are not common in the area.

Stacy is about 30 miles north of St. Paul.
This is sad commentary about reporting. These "comments" would not have beenadded to an article if the vehicle was a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup.
