not really sure what you are doing...but sounds as if you are trying to connect a trailer brake controller. If you buy a harness for this (10-15 dollars) then it will plug in directly and dont have to make wire connections..I did this on a 03 and only took a few mins (unless you have the offroad lights from dealer then they are plugged into the same spot)
