Thinking of buying an H3 if...
... I can outfit it with special hand controls. I'm pretty short and can't reach the pedals. Any recommendations?

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
If it can be done in another vehicle it can be done in an H3.

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
welcome to the forum
Do want recomendations for hand controls or what H3 packages to get? I don't know about hand controls but I always believe anything can be done.
At the least I'd get the adventure package and Monsoon sound system. The sunroof is real nice too. get a tan while driving.

Thanks for the welcome.
Info on both would be great. Thnx. I'm finally in the position to buy a vehicle for the first time. I've been watching and reading this site for a long time(funny with LOTS of interesting characters) and really want to try new things(offroading and stuff). I live in northern California so there are lots of trails. The rubicon trail is not to far away. I really love the thread about it with all of the pictures. I read it on the old site, I think in the H2 section.
I'm hoping to get my seat adjusted forward & up so I can have a better seating/viewing postion.

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
well I'm definetely underqualified here. But I'll give what ideas I can. A local dealer may have more ideas and options that meet your needs. Just walk in and say I want an H3 how do we get there. Make them do some work.
Since you plan on running trails I would say the adventure package is a must. But it doesn't come with electric seat. Just manual ones.
The luxury package comes with an electric seat. That and fabricating a seat frame mount should work well. And you can still move the seat back and down to help you get out of the vehicle. The seat is only mounted to the floor by four bolts so using some square steel stock and a little welding would be rather simple for someone who knows how to weld. even extending the wires to the seat is simple.
I hope someone here has a little more knowledge and can help you better

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
welcome eric , i work for enterprise truck rental now , but used to work with the car division . we have hand controls that could be fit into any of our rental vehicles for people with physical challenges .
this type of setup should be available , im not sure where to find them but they should be available to the general public . you might try a google search for the controls , probably just let them know its a H3 that you want to use them in . probably a different size than what would be in a Metro hope this helps .

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
Welcome Eric,
Definately consider the adventure package if you are thinking of doing alot of off roading, it comes with the rear locker and larger tires.
If I had to do it again when ordering, I would have gotten the adventure package.
I ended up buying the 33 inch tires after, but still no rear locker.

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
Welcome eric. I have seen a setup in a Trailblazer where it did have hand controls. Since the H3 would be close to teh same thing, I'm positive it can be done.
Go to your local HUMMER dealer and sit in a LUx package and move the seat up and forward to see if that part will work for you to start. If it does, the hand control part should be easy to do.
Here's one I found that could work. Your dealer shoudl ahve some better resources though.

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
Another thing to consider is how you get in and out of the truck. There are a couple of options.
Assist steps that can be used with rocker panel protection. The steps need to be removed before offroading. Not hard, just a couple of bolts.
Nerf bars. With nerf bars on you can't have the rocker panel protection. kind of a dumb set up. These have 4 bolts each to take them off. And it's recomended that they are removed before offroading mostly to keep from damaging the bar. If you leave them on they reduce you ground clearance by an inch or two. I have them on my truck but haven't tested how much abuse they will take.
If I had know about the assist steps when I bought my truck I probubly would have gone that route.
Another thing for offroading is an underbody shield. It's not included in the Adventure package but is probubly a good idea. Below is a link to what I'm talking about. The adventure package includes a shield for engine, trany and transfer case. But there's still a big area not covered. These will help protect that.

Welcome...
MOST major cities have handicap outfitters that do auto/truck modifications, be it hand controls/wheelchair access, etc.
Do a GOOGLE or ASK search and go from there. Good luck.

Re: Thinking of buying an H3 if...
Well, after much thinking about this subject I've come to the conclusion that it won't be feasible for me to own & drive an H3. Sadly, my dream has come to an end. I have found that there won't be enough room for my wheelchair in the back of the H3. I was really looking forward to joining the world of wheeling with you great people. I've looked at so many different brands of 4X4s and have never found another group that's as entertaining and fun.
Maybe I can hitch a ride with someone that's going to do the Rubicon. I live in Sacramento so it's just up the hill from me.
