You can by pass Vail by going over Independance Pass south of Leadville....Closed in the winter.

Or you can go north on hwy 9 off I-70 then west on Grand County 1 to State Bridge. However it is a gravel road in places. Independance Pass is paved and will cut off aobut an 1.5 hours of travel time. That is where John Denver got many speeding and DUI tix.

Very Scenic compared to I-70

Oh yeah, you can also go from Leadville to Minturn which lands back on I-70 just past Vail.
