First of all, being TOO far back is subjective. At first, I felt they were too far back, but now after almost 20K miles, I have no problem with their location.
As for switching; it would require a complete new door panel and possible an extension for the existing wiring harness to reach the new switches.

The GM 4.3 is an inherently unbalanced motor because of its 90 degree block layout with 6 cyls, When they added the balance shaft it helped some. With 6 cyls. you want to stick with 60 degrees and 8 cyls. 90 degrees. That's why they were able to take massive horsepower out iof the 3.8 motor unlike the 4.3. The RebelQuote:

True, the 4.3L only made 190 HP, but it was a monster with 260 ft-lbs of torque. It was a great mill for the Blazer and S10 ZR2 trucks.
