Anyone think it would be a good idea to have some custom low-profile custom tool boxes made to sit on the roof? They could be made to bolt to Gobi racks, factory roof bars and even bolt directly on the roof rails.

I used to keep all of my off road gear in the truck tool box and I worry about getting out and not having some of the gear with me.

I had tools, tow chains/straps, shovel, hi-lift, etc., etc., etc....

I keep thinking a lockable low-profile roof box would be great. There are places out there that would do this. A black powder coated would fit the bill for me

There is just not a lot of storage in the H2 (worse even in my SUT)...

Up to four of these will fit in the back of an H2 SUV stacked two high:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&pro...148-93800&lpage=none

I took out my 3rd row seat, as I figure I'll use that once or twice per year at most and can easily put it back in there. I have two of those tubs in my H2 right now. One has a bunch of emergency vehicle gear (inter alia, first aid kit; jumper cables; rope; shovel; tire-repair kit; tie-downs and bungee cord; tools; winching gear and tow straps; etc...). The other has a bunch of miscellaneous camping gear that would also be helpful if I ever got stranded. I have two other tubs (putting them in the H2 affects my rear field of view a little) loaded with most of the other gear I might need for camping, backpackign, hunting, or wheeling. Thus, I just have to load two more pre-packed interlocking tubs, throw in a few extras, and I can go hunting, camping, wheeling on about 1-2 hours notice.

That would work okay for an SUV, but I have an SUT. I use the rear & interior areas for whatever I am doing at the time and need something to keep all of that stuff in that you never know when you are going to nee it and somewhere out of the way

Um, GOBI makes tool boxes for their racks.

I picked up one of these for my SUT. Works great for storing smaller items in the upper level drawers, and the lower one is deep enough for recovery straps/chain and other misc items.

Get the gobi bed rack and put one or two of the tool boxes on it. That way you can still use the rest of the small ass bed for whatever esle you try to fit in its cramped ass quarters! Sorry I think the bed is fairly useless especially without the gobi rack. SUT's look cooler though!

No you don't that was just a pad </div></BLOCKQUOTE>HA!!! Seriously, I want to see how he mounted it in the SUT's bed. I also want to see how secure it is because there aren't many mounting points back there.

Black Diamond
Cheaper One, but just as good.

Ken, give me a few days, but I'll snap you some pics. It is mounted flush against the jack side in the bed of the SUT. It comes with a tray that you can mount to the floor, which allows the box to slide out to the end of the tailgate for easier access, yet remain secure when not in use.

Curious... has anyone tried one of these boxes mounted in a SUV H2?? Or, besides the plastic storage, is there another option for the SUV?

Thanks!
