Default Traction control switch not working?

I was at the beach on sunday ,I thought I would shut off traction and fool around but it didnt do anything?.I beleve I hit the button sometime over the last 10 months and it worked?.
I did unplug it looked at pins(looked ok) and repluged it,still does not work.

Any Ideas before I bring it to the dealer I dont have a chance to bring it there next week and Im going away to Georgia the following week so its a few weeks to get it there .

Going to dealer = pain in the a s s

I think you have to hold it down for like 10 seconds before it turns off and shows the message in the message center

I just did it and said stab sysem off and traction light was on.
I thought you could disable traction then if you hold it for 5 seconds to disable stab system.thats what i figured from reading the manual ?
I guess it disingages both at the same time .

I think traction control system and the Stabilitrac system are entirely different.

Stabilitrac you can turn off, when you put the truck into 4wheel low, Stabilitrac automatically turns off, but the traction control system is still on.

In one of the "Diff" threads, we discussed using BTM in different situations.

I soft dirt, sand etc, it is best to allow the traction controll to do its thing, by allowing the wheels to spin until traction is transferred to the wheels that have it.

I situations where "sudden" traction can cause damage to moving parts, (front axels:-), using BTM and NOT allowing the wheels to spin, thereby not giving the traction control an opportunity to engage is best.

Like that

When you shut off stab sys the traction light on dash is on so I assume the traction is disingaged.

With the 5-speed you don't have stabil-trac right?
only traction control

So HummBebe I should turn of the traction control (the vehicle with squigly lines) on rough rocky trails and let the front wheels spin??

I thought the idea was the brakes slowed the wheel that was spinning and transferred the power to the one not spining?

Do you think the traction control casued the shock loads that breaks the ring gear or the shock from spinning wheels sudennly grabbing solid ground?? Still think the diff housing flexes?? I'll be carefull with my lead foot for awhile

Why didn't GM give us a real front locker with an on and off switch with the Adventure Package?

only traction control. Correct.

The Stabilitrac conversation does not apply to those owners with a Manual trans.

So HummBebe I should turn of the traction control (the vehicle with squigly lines) on rough rocky trails and let the front wheels spin?? You cannot turn off traction control. And no....

Read my response again....only in soft soil and sand

To disengage Stabilitrac (not traction control)you put the truck in neutral, press the button that says 4lo with the picture of the little lock next to it. Put the truck in 1st gear, the Stabilitrak system off message will show on the DIC in front of your steering wheel.

I thought the idea was the brakes slowed the wheel that was spinning and transferred the power to the one not spining?

Uh no, you missed it again....traction control works only when the wheels are spinning, if you apply the brakes it prevents traction control from engaging. Hence, BTM prevents traction control from engaging.

Typically, you would be in 4 hi or 4 hi lock when you are in soft soils and sand, which allows traction control to engage.

Do you think the traction control casued the shock loads that breaks the ring gear or the shock from spinning wheels sudennly grabbing solid ground?? NO, I was not spinning the front wheels when my diff broke. It was the torque that caused the diffhousing to flex, forcing the pinion gear into the ring gear and grinding off 8 teeth.

Still think the diff housing flexes?? I'm sure that it does, it has been confirmed by the GM engineers that this in fact is the case.

I'll be carefull with my lead foot for awhile. Ask people who wheel with me, I'm usually the most cautious of the group.

Why didn't GM give us a real front locker with an on and off switch with the Adventure Package? AMSTAR is working on it as we type, so am I

I hope this helps.

Now I am confused because I can push the button on the dash and turn it (trac control) off? I have a 5-speed.

So turning it off dissables the ABS controll traction control on all wheels correct?

I haven't tried it in low range locked up yet.

I guess the weak link is the Al diff housing with all the torque from the 4:1 t-case.

I really don't know about the Manual, this conversation does not apply to Manual.

So turning it off dissables the ABS controll traction control on all wheels correct?

I believe there are three systems at least...

Electronic Traction Control
ABS (Automatic Braking System)
Stabilitrak

I haven't tried it in low range locked up yet.

If you have a stabilitrak button, it may be a dummy??? Put the truck in 4lo lock 1st gear, and see if you get the warning on the DIC.

I guess the weak link is the Al diff housing with all the torque from the 4:1 t-case.

According to my sources at GM, the problem is twofold. It is the aluminum housing and a ring gear that may not have been hardened properly. They are looking for a fix to the housing issue, and they are increasing the (?fancy word for) tensil strength of the ring gear.

f5fstop!!! where are you??
