It's just my opinion, but I wish I could remove the rev limiter. It's got a lot more under it, maybe 20mph. If I needed it, I want it. Hell, a bad guy with a Yugo could run me down!

Hey, 120 isn't that fast on a wide open rural road with no entrances. Out here in places, the road's nice and smooth, there's no bushes, trees or other hidey holes for cars turning into your way or for police to hide.

No, it's not a common occurance for me to bump 100, it's just that I don't like being choked off by a computer setpoint. I DO drive 80+ all the time (thank you V1) Almost every day I drive 45 miles home or to work and don't see another vehicle either way so haul asss mode is the norm, hell if there were a button on the dash to drop the H3 five inches for hot roadwork, I would've bought the option!

97 isn't that fast, period. The H3 has a nice, low, wide footprint and handles quite well at that speed, and probably more. It's no big deal unless you're a bad driver that isn't used to handling vehicles at high speed. If you're one of those, then 55mph is easily maintained eh?

The biggest problem I have with the limiter is that sometimes I go to pass some a-hole on a long stretch and he/she speeds up. Well, a lot of them have a limiter too and it'd be awfully nice to hand 'em their ass by walking by them while their computer is shutting them down.

SO How do you diable the computer limiter? And if it was disabled, how fast would the truck motor get you up to?

Are there any other issues that would be problematic if the limiter was disengaged? In regards to engine performance.

Isn't that the speed governer? I thought the rev limiter was different. In the photograph, the engine is hardly pushing 3,000 RPM and isn't near redline. Just curious.

I'm almost certain that he meant the speed limiter, but this brings up another point. 3,000 rpm at 110 mph?? What RPM does it turn at 70 mph? Must be an awfully tall top gear, given the 4.56 axle ratios, to only turn 3,000 rpm at 110, no?

Speed Limiter protects the driver and GM from lawsuits.
The Speed limite is set up based on vehicle handling characteristics at certain speeds, and also on the speed rating of the tires. The larger Bridgestones are rated for approx. 106 mph (no official speed rating required for truck tires); therefore, GM will set the speed limiter to around 5-6 mph under to protect them from a possible lawsuite.

GM sets all the trucks speed limiters at 100 mph (or there about). My 97 K1500 is that way, my wifes 01 4wd tahoe was that way, and like the picture shows, it would appear that the H3 is that way... and probably the H2 as well. I think their thinking is that you don't need to go any faster, and nothing else. It's not vehicle specific.

Many of the aftermarket engine tuners (at least for the older Gm's) usually have an option to set it higher.

I'm leaving the rev limiter as is on my H3. My Porsche with a top speed of 164mph is better suited to bursts of very high speeds.

I do typically run 75-90mph on the freeway in my H3.

I've hit 100 mph in the H2 a couple times, and it is quite stable, but the last time I did it, we were coming over a rise, and I forgot that there was a stop sign just a few hundred feet on the other side, leading to the highway. I hit the brakes hard, and for a moment, I wasn't sure if I would stop in time. It was the first time I ever experienced brake fade, and that scared me even more. I then put the brake pedal to the floor, and didn't even have ABS flinch, they had faded so badly. But it did get me stopped. I haven't drive over the speed limit since.

The last time I had brake fade, I was coming down a mountain at 45 MPH when my jake brake quit working. It was a 6% grade about 7 miles long and windy. I just started down it when it quit. I had to do some serious braking and downshifting to keep my 105,500 lb gasoline laden rig under control. There is nothing more scary than knowing you are a rolling bomb on the verge of going out of control. Talk about a pucker factor, you couldn't put a pin up my ass with a jackhammer after that!

I can imagine that would be a terrifying experience. When my father was younger, he worked for a couple years transporting rigloads of dynamite for several of the mining companies throughout the province. He got bonus pay for delivering such things, but I do not know if money can justify that sort of thing. I was scared enough with my situation.
