Default Battery Cover Purpose?

My friends son thought the battery cover was so the H3 could go under water! Anyone understand the elaborate shroud on the battery...

well it has a breather tube so i assume its to keep hydrogen gas from escaping into the engine bay and reducing explosion liklyhood in the event of a jump start. im just guessing

Also the fuse box is lower than the battery.
I would be mostly worried about the fuse box when it comes to water,It is not sealed .I would'nt worry about getting it wet but if it goes under water you would be fvcked.

The battery cover is used to help reduce the temperature of the battery. Heat kills the separator plates inside the battery so the cover helps to keep it cooler; especially with the air intake that forces air into the case when the vehicle is moving. It is not used for waterproofing.

Cha-ching... we have a winner. Step right up and collect your prize, sir.

Heat is the numer one killer for batts' it takes it's toll on them... hense the somewhat short lifespan. When I bought my truck new in 97 it didn't have anything to protect the batt, and I had to replace it in a about 3 or 4 years. When we bought my wifes 4wd Tahoe new in 01, it had a foam koozie like material around the batt, and it was still in there when we sold it in July of this year, same batt.
