Rear Axle Light Flashing

Hi everyone!! I got my H3 a week ago, and today while driving (not in 4X4) I was at a red light. I don't know if the road was too terribly icy, it didn't seem icy at all. I started driving, then I noticed my axle lock light flashing. It flashed for about 20 seconds, then it stopped. It really freaked me out!

Has this happened to anyone? I am wondering if it happened because the road was slippery and it was regaining traction? Can the rear axle lock engage itself if it needs to?

I called GM and the lady did a quick search but she didn't think that it was normal.

You who have to be in Low Range 4x4 for the locker to activate?
were you in Hi Range 4x4 locked? Maybe you bumped the rear axle locker switch by accident? and it flashed?

Maybe it was just traction control kicking in?

I can't think of any reason it would do that. You can only engage the rear locker when in low 4wd lock. Even then, the rear locker will disengage above 20 mph. It won't engage on it's own, under normal circumstances, so I would say something is abnormal. Even if you engage it, and it disnegages when you go over 20 mph, it won't re-engage aftrewards. So, I have no idea why yours would flash. I don't know if it means it's a problem, but it shouldn't be doing that.

Are you sure it's the rear locker, or is it the traction control? I would assume that the traction control may flash if your tires slipped on some ice, but being from south texas, I can only assume .. as it's not our normal routine to travel icey roads.

it may be like someone said above, that the axle lock switch was pressed accidentaly by you or a passenger, and because you were not in 4low then it would not engage, and from what i can tell from the otehr lights, if its unable to switch from 4hi to 4low for example the light flashes several times and then stops. So im assuming that this may have happened. Dont know if its technical or anything.

By the way, where was the light that was flashing, located? Was it flashing an icon in the instrument panel, or on a button, such as the ones on the transfer case selection switches?

If the rear locker wasn't disengaging properly you would feel it on pavement when turning etc.

Hi everyone, thanks for the input. The button was not pressed by accident. It is flashing on the button itself. I also noticed to day that everytime I start my truck, it flashes for a few seconds. I can engage it if I am in 4 low, and the light stays on.

I am hoping it flased only because of something to do with my traction control. I tried to slide around a corner to see if I could get it to flash again, but just my luck, it is warming up a bit & I couldn't get the tires to spin out.

There were a couple of H3's that had an issue with the switch panel. If it does it again, take it to the dealer, it's probably the switch.

Which of these buttons was flashing? The last one on the right is Stabilitrac. The 2nd from the right is the locking rear diff.

Maybe the plugs not cliped in properly behind the panel,pop it off and take a look.
Stick your fingers in the sockets and pull/yank upwards then work your way around panel top vents will come off with panel.

Ours did that, and eventually, we got the service 4wd message. The coil shorted out back there and the heat killed the rear diff. It was covered.

Good point, but I would pull from the top (use a thin plastic tool or spoon to pulle away the top from the I/P). Then make sure all the connectors are plugged in.

If not, I would have the dealer check for a code.

Thanks again everyone. I am getting a guy from the dealership to pick it up and take it in to get looked at. Who knows when he is going to do this, but I will let you know what I find out!!!
