Default 4wheel drive switches...stays in Neutral?

Sometimes I get in my truck, fire it up and the red light stays on for Neutral, and never switches to 4 hi. I can press the 4 hi button and it will stay in 4 hi. But I have also noticed that if I forget to look and I'll be driving and it will still be in Neutral (redlight) and not driving any different at all than if it was in 4 hi. Its out of warranty, any suggestions?

This happened on a few '05 and '06 models. There is a thread in here in the technical section in the summer of 2005. As I remember it's a relay that is cheap and easy to have replaced.

You may want to have the battery checked out to make sure it is up to par. You could be having a low voltage situation to the tccm when first starting it up causing it to do weird things.

I would like to revive this thread. Ive been experiencing the same problem. My TC tends to go from 4HI to The RED NEUTRAL Light on it's own. I would like to resolve this myself before taking it to the dealer. From the info I have gathered these could be some of the fixes but would like to hear from others who have resolved this

1- Replace TCCM Actuator?
2- Replace relay fuse?
3- Replace Encoder motor?
4- Go through all TC drives 25 times?

I can't find the old thread on this but I remember something about going from 4Hi into 4 Lo and 4 Hi lock several times to see if it clears things up.

Jim, I believe that would be similar to what Ive read by going through 4HI and 4LO 25 times. I don't see how that would work but I will give it a try. The funny thing is when the TC goes into Neutral, the truck seems to drive smoother however my gas mileage only averages 8.9 at best!!

Cesarjajr, does your light stay in Neutral or does it go back and forth to 4HI like mine? Has your gas mileage changed?

it stays red in netural, i have to hit the 4 hi and then it will stay on 4 hi.
it happens on and off. i shift to drive and sometimes it's red in neutral.
some times im already driving when i see it in red neutral and didnt see when it changed.
i have seen no dip in miles + or -.

This happened to me the other day and even the service 4wd came on after trying to switch. I pulled over turned off and then cycled thru the choices. seemed to work. I didn't do it 25 times but should probably give it a run thru. I've searched the issue on this site. Some say sticky cyleniod or error from never using. So I plan to cylce thru the 4wd choices and air ride height adjustment more often.

Older post, but my SUT suddenly started having the same problem. Does driving while the neutral (red light) is on hurt anything? I Ned to have it looked at, unless someone knows the solution...

I just posted a thread on this myself.

This just started on mine after I installed 2 new hubs. Never did it before, so I thought it was related - Maybe not?
