Feedback need on buying a new Mtn Bike

I am on a budget here 500-1000.

Can anyone give me some good suggestions in regards to a dual shock system for a large guy 6'3 @ 250 lbs

these are the two I am currently looking at

This one is at 1k and fits the bill.. any rider experience here?

Hmmm B, I'd go with the Mongoose.

I have no idea (cuz your so tall and chunky ), but DDWH, CO Hummer, Timgco and a few others could probably help you out. They helped me when I looked for one. NewHummerguy got one recently too...

The only question for you I would have is what will be the primary use of the bike. Will you be doing more downhill technical riding than normal flat trail rides??? If not then a hardtail with front shock would probably be better.

I have a full suspension Iron Horse but I use it at ski resorts going down hill. F/S bikes are a lot heavier and make for some labor filled rides on the flats.

I totally agree. If you are only spending 500-1000, then stay away from a full suspension bike or you're going to get a pile of crap that weighs 40+ lbs. Get a Specialized, Giant, or Jamis hardtail - best value for the money IMO.

It really depends on teh type of rides you'll be doing with it.

Those frames you pictured looked like downhill bikes.

In that price range, get a fron susp. bike only (as CO mentioned). You want to make sure you are getting some good components for your money. If you don;t you'll have a full susp. bike with busted parts and will end up spending outside your budget to keep it going.

Look into Specialized.

I got a front suspension only Specialized (Hardrock) when I got mine. I love it. I've taken it on and offroad, the quality is good. Here is a link to the mountain bikes:

Like I said, I have the Hardrock. CO Hummer had suggested the Stumpjumpers before I believe.

If you weight that much and your after a full suspension bike, you will hate it in the long run, youd be better off buying a motorcycle, seriously.

If its exercise your after and you just are trying to look cool on a cool bike, forget about it. Buy a Townie for exercise, more ergonomic, rigid too.

Most people make mistakes buying full suspension bikes thinking that theyre fun, they are but only if your not pedaling, can you say POGO STICK.

If you want to maximize your purchase buy something off of craigslist or ebay or a local bike shop that sells used bikes.

Thanks for the input everyone. I didn't know the FS bikes in regards to weight would cause more overall drag on the flats.

We will be riding trails mostly just for exercise and spending time with the family. My wife is taking my other Mongoose and our daughter is taking my old rigid Gary Fisher.

It has been about 8 years since I have really read up on the current bikes and gear hence I had made assumptions that most were going with FS bikes for all round versatility, but I can see hardtails would make sense if the rear suspension isnt a must.

We shall keep shopping and yes CO i need to lose about 15 lbs . Its almost fall and time to get out and enjoy the weather.

I will keep shopping and see what else fits the bill.

Get yourself a CycleOps Indoor Trainer if your serious about losing weight, get some DVDs about spinning or whatever appeals to you for the winter months coming, you will be ready by spring to really get in shape.

Losing weight on a bike is easy, but remember that your body will burn the muscle first before it burns that fat, Survival mode of the machine, so if your wanting to maintain your muscle-bulk, eat accordingly.

You can do this

I appreciate the pep talk bud, however as a lifelong athlete I am very aware how to maintain my body, now having the will power and discipline is another story. And quite frankly i am sick of the indoors and want a new ride. Thanks again for the input.

Most bang for the buck is the 08 Jamis lineup. I have never been a huge fan of Jamis, but they really went through and tweeked the 08 bikes. Better quality and components with aggresive price points.

Specialized has some nice bikes in your price range aswell, but I haven't looked to see what they are doing for 08.

Giant will have some nice bikes aswell. I have been riding Giant for XC training and racing for 5+ years now. Love'em!

Just look to get a decent set of componets mix and disc brakes.
