My H3, manual (stick) trans, offroad package (built in Feb '06) has a very definite whine to the drivetrain ONLY when in low-lock. No vibration or grinding, and yes it increases in pitch with vehicle speed and I'm talking about the range from 1 to about 10 mph (has never been above 3 gear in low lock). Is this normal?? Is it due to the crawl ratio we have in the offroad package? (It just seems loud to me as compared to my Grand Cherokee or Isuzu Rodeo when they are in 4-low)

Yes, it is very loud.

Yes, it is very normal. Lots and lots of gear whine when in low range.

Enjoy

Normal on the H3, as it was normal on my TJ. Louder on the H3, but it has lot lower gearing than the TJ.

add some dyno-mat around the transmission hump to reduce the noise coming into the cab.

I should add, if you have an early model vehicle, and the noise is all the time and getting louder as time goes on, there could be a rear axle replacement in your future.

But, I'm assuming, you have a newer model, and the problem with the lapping compound on the rear axles was on early vehicles only. (The lapping compound issue will not be present on vehicles built after August 10, 2005.)

So, if I'm assuming correctly, it is normal for a low gearing situation.
