Default Need some adive from you experianced Hummer guys? Wandering steering!

Right here goes.My steering on my H2 is wandering. I have to keep making constant small adjustments with the steering wheel as i am driving,in order to keep it in a straight line. I have less than a quarter of a inch of free play in the steering wheel(Is this normal??)

Ive checked the pitman arms, and they seem to be ok. There is no movement in them. The steering box doesnt have any leaks, and the tie rods are fine. The bad points are the top ball joint on the drives side is fubar. I also have a lot of play in both wheel bearings. (Just got my replacements delivered)

What i would like to know is. Could replacing the wheel bearings and the top ball joint cure the issue. Or do i need to look elsewhere.

Thanks for any advice given..Mark

(A happy H2 owner in the UK)

A huge part of it is probably just the fact that it's a big, heavy, 3/4 ton full-time 4 wheel drive with tires that are 35" tall and 12" wide. I'd just try getting an alignment possibly with a little more toe-in and see what that does. If you don't have play at the steering wheel you probably don't need to go looking for mechanical problems.

do you still have the OEM steering stabalizer? the factech one works great. its cheap and you probably need one anyway. super easy install.

I added the link because wandering steering can be a problem in any part of any item within the front end. The trick to find it.

A bad ball joint and bad wheel bearings can certainly contribute to your problem. Have you looked at your tires closely? Any uneven or excessive wear? This can also be a huge factor in how your truck will track, especially on uneven/grooved pavement.

I would suggest replacing the parts you describe and possibly your tires (rotating may also be an option) if they are worn unevely and then get a good alignment.

Ive just put a new set of fronts on. The old ones were wearing on the insides. Ive had the alighment done. But to be honest i dont have the correct figures to work with(If anyone can give them would be appreciated) The guy doing the alignment work done it to what he thought best using the laser tracking gear.

Well the bearings will be going on this week along with the ball joints. I will see how it goes then.

If you have play in your steering you probably have worn tie rods or your steering box has play in it.

I just went through this with a Dodge Diesel. The bad ball joints will cause it to pull.

Wandering is either warn tires and or a combination of warn tires and a bad steering box and tie rods.

I went through these parts twice on my 06 diesel so I sold it.
