I am looking for some information about towing capacity for my dad. The H2 is rated to be able to tow 6,700 lbs. We need it to be able to tow about 8,500 lbs. What can we do to the H2 itself (not the trailer hitch) to increase our towing capacity? Thanks in advance!

I believe LasVegas is right, and I would add that you might need a heavier clutch, new transfer case, new differentials front and rear as well as new U-joints all over. Even then, it might not work.

The truck is engineered for certain tasks and loads. Whenever, you materially exceed those limits, you're taking a chance. You are talking about a 26.86% increase in load over rated capacity.

Sounds pretty scarey to this amateur.

I tow a 8k lb trailer with a stock H2. Although it's only occasional towing it's tows with no problem. Stable and ample power. I would not go any more than 8k. I was told the H2 is rated at 7k. But this is always a question depending on what dealer your talking to.
Just my 2 cents!

Phild, I agree and yes I do use a weight distribution system. I mostly tow 5 - 7 hrs on my trips but this summer I am planning to head to Hatfield McCoy WV for some ATV riding so that will be the test. It;'s about 11 hours with lots of grades. I did just order the Volant cool air intake and a Borla Catback exhaust. Also thinking about the computer upgrade as well. Not that this changes the capacity but any help is good.

Not sure if this makes a difference we would only be doing this two maybe twice a year. 2 hr drive each time and one way would be going to a much higher elevation say going from 500 ft to about 5-6000

There are many different ones out there, but that will save you a ton of cash in the future.
