tire height

So I have talked with a couple people on this already and got some good replies, burt thought I would make this public to see if anyone else has ran into this.

I have 35 12.50 18 BFG MT's with 18 x 9 rims.

I have 1.25" of clearance left to hitting the garage frame (not the rubber flap that sits lower yet).

I want to go to 37's, but I know there will be around a 2" higher if I stick with the same rims. The tires I currently have a worn down good. They measure 34" in their current state.

the procomps i want to switch to are 37's (36.8" high is what their web states). Si I would be raising the vehicle height by 2.8" if this is correct.
And that won't fit!

Do you think I can make this work if I switch to a 17" rim? The reason I ask: I looked at older pics of my past H2's with 37's on the stock rims. There was more sidewall buldge on the 37 x 12.50 x 17 bfg mt tires. They all fit in the garage, but the past H2 all had air susp. This one does not and sits higher in the rear of the vehicle. Do you think the 37's on a 17" rim will have more sidewall buldge to make this fit?

Oh yeah,(for you smart a$$es) parking outside or airing down to fit in the garage is not an option.

Procomp Extreme AT's 37 13.50 17 or 18 is what I'm after.

Hmm..., if you're current tire diameter is 34" and you're moving up to a 36.8" diameter tire, that should only increase your total height by 1.4". Isn't that the way it's supposed to work? So, you still won't be able to fit because that's .15" too high. But, if the 36.8" is not the true height, and it's actually lower, then you'll be fine. Did you say that you don't have the air suspension now? Then, just throw a couple of salt bags in the back to weight it down until your tires wear down enough to fit into the garage without the extra weight.

It's the actual frame that's there. My door is up out of the way. I looked at rasing it up a little. I may be able to get another 1" if I remove one trim part and get a longer rubber flap for the seal. But that may not work. I have to have someone take a look at it.

Tim, how high is your garage threshold or frame or whatever the technical term is?

I was thinking of doing 37's aswell. I was unsure of what the add would be to the height. My opening is 83.5" and I have the roll up door is set at 86.5". I figured worst case, I would remove the roof rack bars.

Tim, you could alway load your truck up with wheeling supplies, parts, etc and that would lower the rear enough for you.

The height only raises by HALF the overall diamater increase. The other half is in the wheel well...

I modifed my garage opening as you're describing. Your door is probably fine/tall enough and a standard 84" Door. I removed one trim piece to gain about 7/8" of clearance. With 37's the stealth rack just clears the weather stripping. I still need to paint the door top that is now exposed, but it turned out nice.

If you have 1.25" of clearance now and you want to go from a 35" to a 37" tire it will only raise your veh. by 1", so it "should" fit. (When you figure the radius of a circle or tire, if it's 2" taller, 1" is on the bottom and 1" is on the top. If you went to a 4" higher tire it would only raise your hummer by 2", etc.) The thing you have to be careful of is what the actual diameter of the tire is. You really need to go measure the tire you want to buy. Example: a BFG mud terrain that they measure as a 35" tire is actually only 33" in diameter. Conversely when you measure a Toyo tire when they say it's 37" in diameter it is actually 36.5". It all depends on which company makes the tire. I can tell you this: I just changed over from 35x12.5x17 BFG's to 37x13.5x17 Toyo M/T's and before I had about 2 1/2" of clearance. Now I have about 1/4" clearance. I just barely squeak that baby in now, but it fits and that's all that counts. Bottom line is your gonna have to measure the tire yourself, do the math and hope for the best. Les Shwaub Tires let me take the Hummer home with the new tires to see if it fit in the garage and if it didn't they offered to take the 37"s back and change me over to 35"s. Give it a try. going from 35 to 37 will only raise @ 1".

You can always Jack the garage up a couple of inches

I live in military housing and cannot make any adjustments to the garage so I had to take the roof racks off the truck to get it in. Gives you about an 1" or so. It would give you more but the damn onstar antenna minimizes the actual gain of taking off the room rack.
