Default Rear window defogger

You know when you look at the rear window, and you see the nice white lines of the defogger grid. Well, when I was looking at mine last night, I notice there is about a 1/2-inch of one of the lines missing. Upon closer inspection, it seems as the warming wire is there, but the white coating on top was not there (like maybe it got scratched off by something).

I was wondering if you have had experience repairing this type of minor damage?

We have a lot of going aways, and there is this paint-like pen that we typically use to sign glass, pictures, etc. I am curious if I got one of these pens in white (ours are silver and gold) if I could recover the exposed wire. This pen has a really nice fine tip, but I am not sure if the "paint" would take the temp. Maybe at worse, I would smell it burning off. And, if it did burn off, I could just touch it up from time to time.

I am in Germany, and it is an ordeal to do warranty stuff -- especially this small. But you're right, I'd be at the dealer in a heart beat if they were next door.
