Default What is this thing?

Hey can someone tell me what this is and what it does. I think someone had trouble with this before and was asking but cant find the thread now.

The thing is the big rectangular plastic thing with the hoses going into it. The problem I am having is that the round thing with the hose going to it is held by 2 metal brackets, however one of mine has somehow fallen of and now it just bounces around in there.

Here are some pics to show what im talking about:

thi sis the whole thing:

here is the whole thing unscrewed and pulled out for better view:

this is the part that has lost the attaching bracket and is loose, this part sits to the left of the entire thing, and i think its the only part that has electrical wiring comming to it:

so can anyone help with what this is, and possibly where i can find that metal bracket for it. I dont have the time or patience to go to dealer for now. Thanks for any help!

Rectangular item is the carbon canister that retains fuel vapors that are eventually returned to the engine for consumption. The round thing is the canister vent valve. A normally open valve that allows outside air to enter the canister.
What happens is there is a purge solenoid that opens per instructions from the PCM and this allows fuel vapors to flow from the canister to the intake manifold. If there was no vent to allow in fresh air, the canister would collapse.
If you can't make it to the dealer, see if it can be tie strapped

Mine was rattling too. I unbolted the canister and put rubber pads where the metal canister and the bracket touch. I also bent the rectangular spring tab on the bottom of the bracket so that it loads the canister tighter when bolted down. I wire tied the main black hose to the bracket to keep it from wiggling. There is a slight rattling sound coming from inside the connector/valve that I'm not sure you can do anything with.

No...probably a lead foot If there is a fault in the system, break in a line, canister, etc., yuo will get a check engine light.

No lead foot, I have been taking it really easy since I put 35's on it. I wanted to see how much I could get out of a tank. Boy was I surprised!!! The most I have got out of three tanks of gas over the weekend, on the highway, was 210. I dropped it off at my dealer on Monday after my trip with a long list of issues. I sure hope something is wrong, cause that ain't gonna cut it. I got 190 miles to half a tank in the loaner H3! Mind you it was a base modle but come on, after all the talk on here, I was sure I wasn't going to take that kind of hit by going to 35's. I am very sad .

With 35's and a constant load of 450+ lbs of gear, I get about 320 to a tank.

And I don't drive with an easy foot (I'm only a speeder when necessary).

I was going to say, Im at about 300 per tank too. Maybe you got one of the H3s with the 15 gal tank.

DD are you sure when you are doing you milage calculations that you are taking into account the less revolutions per mile that the 35s make compared to the 33s or 32s. Maybe that throwing you calculations off a bit, but as i stated in the other thread in teh general forum, i got 150-200 over the winter, but on teh last tank it looks like i will get about 300+.

Did you ever get to the dealer and ask about that "gas vent thing" whatever it was, that is loose?
