H3 recognized for 'Interior of the Year'

The 2006 Hummer H3, which is made at Shreveport's GM plant and went on sale first here Tuesday, has been honored in its category for automotive "Interior of the Year" at the Auto Interiors Show, GM announced Wednesday.

Currently GM-Shreveport is producing 300 H3s a day, expecting to increase production to 450 a day by midsummer, Plant Manager David Gibbons has said. The Shreveport plant is the only GM operation making the H3s, the newest in the Hummer line.

Nominated by Ward's Auto World magazine, the H3 won in the "industry at large, popular priced truck" category.

"The goal was to make the interior more refined, purposeful, comfortable and well-crafted," said Jon Albert, interior design manager for the H3, which is a smaller version of previous Hummers.

The interior has bright trim accents and more use of color.

More than 80 journalists and 900 industry executives made the winning selections. Thirteen cars and 10 trucks were nominated.

Also, the Hummer brand showed the most improvement in the 2005 survey by J.D. Power and Associates, released Wednesday. In 2004, Hummer was last among vehicle brands with 173 problems per 100 vehicles. This year it had 110 problems per 100 vehicles.
