i say don't do it unless you actually get the ballasts. there is nothing more that i hate than being blinded by a bad HID conversion without the proper cut offs.

In a simple version - No, you can't.

Long version - the H13 bulb is designed to have two filaments (high and low beams) off the center axis of the headlight housing itself. If you can imagine a rod coming out perfectly from the center of the headlight bucket and sticking straight out, the bulb filaments ride above and below that center axis line.

This basically means that it achieves it's goal of lighting properly by a combination of the reflector bucket and the positioning of which filament is active at the given time.

True HID bulbs/ballast combinations use a D1 or D2 bulb. Both bulbs are center aligned axis bulbs that are going to be the wrong distance away from the headlight bucket itself. This means that if you put in a HID conversion kit into the H3, it will shine at the wrong angles and blind people. On top of that, you get less light on the road than if you had normal headlight bulbs in.

Because the H3 uses a focused headlight reflector bucket with a plexiglass front lens rather than the normal headlight setups (focused bucket and frensel lensing glass) found in the H1/H2's, you would have to find a 5" headlight bucket (no glass) that fits an H4 based bulb. Then, you'd replace the bucket, convert over to the H4 bulb base, and go from there.

I've resigned myself to using higher wattage bulbs from Optilux to give my wife's H3 the headlight brightness that I'm used to, until I can locate some LHD European Code 5" focused reflector buckets with an H4 base.
