Default New engines

Why is it that all H1's that I see for sale always have new engines at like 40k to 50k miles? Is it just due to the amount of dirt they inhale off road, or will the Duramax last much longer?

Depending on the year, it's the #8 block crack syndrome. It can also be misdiagnosed as a simple head gasket replacement as well.

As Steve mentioned, there was few years where the 6.5 turbos were experiencing cracking around the number 8 cylinder - it was a bad combination of design and application. Many trucks had the faulty engine removed and a "corrected" engine installed as a result.

so with out the fault, how long would you expect the turbo diesel to last. My buddy has a dodge 3500 and the engine isn't even fully broken in till 80-90k. It's supposed to last 500k before any major work is needed. Is duramax comparable?

The engine with proper service can go a very, very long time.

Call it about 300k in a TD. The NA engine (non-turbo variant) can go longer. There's a NA in a 1993 Hummer that's got about 700k on it.

I'm rolling around at about 105,000 with new headgaskets installed in march. She still runs like new, and hopefully will contiue to for a LONG LONG time.
