Default Question about Tire, wheel size, gas mileage

Is there any difference in fuel economy or wear and tear on the rig if I go down in size?

I currently am running 20 inch rims and 37.5 inch tires

If I go too 17 inch rims and 37 inch tires am I going too

1. Bring the truck a little lower in Height?
2. Get any different gas mileage?
3. Have any less wear and tear on the motor and trans?
4. Will my rig look odd with a 4 inch suspension and that 17 inch rim and 37 inch
tire configuration, I think Rancho designed theyre 4 inch lift for that config?

Thanks any education is appreciated.

1= I/4 INCH LOWER
2= NOT MUCH IF ANY
3= NO
4= NO REALY THE OVER ALL HIGHT OF THE TIRE IS ONLY GOING TO BE 1/2 INCH LESS, THE TIRE WILL HAVE MORE SIDEWALL IN A 37X17 THAN A 20X37.5 . OVER ALL YOU WILL SEE MORE SIDEWALL AND LESS RIM WITH A 17X37.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT NOW ? LOOKS GOOD TO ME.

Shoot.... I can tell that it's 1/4 of an inch too tall!

Actually you'll find that the 37/17s are cheaper, but you have to buy new rims, which might offset that completely.

I have to say it looks pretty damn nice from where I'm sitting...

you can shop around and get stock H2 rims cheap if you look .I bought a set of 4 that were take off's and in 100% perfect condition for $200.00 and last week a bought another set that was in good condition with a very slight nick in the lip for $125.00 as a spare set,both sets came with the lugs. the deals are out there if you hunt them down.

yea that always kills me if you get 37 inch tires that have a 22 inch rim compared to 37 inch tires for a 17 inch rim the 22 inch rim tires are alot more, sometimes double the price.

But to the tire manufacturer there is 5 inches less sidewall of tire for each tire, so why the hell would the price be twice as much because your running 22 inch rims. Its because they know your spending big bucks to buy big rims, so they double theyre price and spend alot less making the tire too cause it uses less rubber.

your onyl going to go down 1/4 of an inch, i mean i dont know about you guys, but i wouldnt recognize 1/4 of an inch difference on a car, unless its its extremly lowered, such as a sports car. I wouldnt worrya bout people noticing its lower, there going ot notice te Rim size first. As for all the other stuff. as for the other stuff im not sure, and why are you changing it, it looks great now.

I like the look too, and Thanks,

My main goal was too reduce the costs of the maintenance as it gets older

Like Pteam says, the tires cost alot more for 20s, BF Goodrich A/Ts are
460.00 Each, if this was my only ride it would be fine, but I have other assets to support as well.

Just putting the feelers out there getting educated by you guys and I really appreciate your feedback, it helps. Thanks

Since some front suspension stuff was cut, it will probably stay where its at, when tire time comes, which wont be for a while yet, ill just bite the bullet,

These Nitto Mud tires are really loud too! When I was 25 that sound was cool, at 42 I like too arrrive a little more under the radar

Thanks Men

I hear you on the high price of 20+" tires!

I too am looking to downsize, but will opt for 18"....just don't like 17" as tires are harder to find and selection is not as good.

You could also step up to a better tire for higher mileage and something a little quieter. If you shop around, you will find a good tire guy with good prices

YOu drive a lifted HUMMER! HOw far under the radar are you looking to get?

I had 37 13.50 17's on my Rancho lifted H2. It handled great! The road noise was like the stock wheels almost. 4WP always have buy 3 get one free deal going on those tires as well.

1. Bring the truck a little lower in Height?1/4"
2. Get any different gas mileage?Some,see next answer.
3. Have any less wear and tear on the motor and trans?At design, we almost always want bigger wheels(just look at concept cars) Engineerings response always is that it will increase wear on the suspension and reduce fuel economy because of the increase in unsprung mass.
4. Will my rig look odd with a 4 inch suspension and that 17 inch rim and 37 inch. Not odd,just different
tire configuration, I think Rancho designed theyre 4 inch lift for that config?

Thanks any education is appreciated.
