I've been told that the regularly scheduled maintenance is covered under the factory warranty for H1s. I haven't had this confirmed (awaiting a call from another dealership). Any H1 owners here who can confirm or refute this. Thanks

Dont let anyone tell you different about the maintenance on the H1, not only is it vital, but it is expensive. The 2003 models and newer cover all of the scheduled maintenance, but prior to 2003, it is approximately 1500.00 every 12,000 miles. This is a group a maintenance, there is then a group A and B at 18000 miles and then the group ABC at 24000 miles. The intermediate maintenance scheduled can run from 200.00 to 1000.00 dependent on what is needed. The scheduled maintenance is so important that they will not do warranty work if the schedule is not fullfilled. I have ball joints replaced at 12200 miles that would not have been covered under warranty if the maintenance was not performed. Some people I know have gotten away without the maintanance checks, but they are pavement princesses that have never seen dirt, rock or water. Make certain that when any maintenance is performed that the book is completely filled out, it is one of the largest indicators of the resale value of your HUMMER. Also, with the 2003 and later the cost of the vehicle will stay a little higher, because it reflects the cost of the scheduled maintenance.

I agree with Black H1 about service, but will also say that when you are out of warrenty 95% of the service that an H1 requires can be done by a good independent auto shop. I do about 75% of the work on my truck myself, the other 20% is done at my local shop, and the remaining 5% is done by the dealer. Having the book stamped is a big plus. I bought my truck without the service reccords, since Oct. I have close to six grand in it and more to come shortly (maybe someday I'll finally get to start buying off road accesories). From what I have seen about the precautions you are taking in buying a truck Bmac you are being VREY smart. Although it sucks to have to wait you will save yourself lots of hedache down the road.

Black H1 and Carey,

Thanks for the replies. I've come to learn of the upkeep expense of the H1 through this and another forum. The information I have received has been enormously helpful. I have also had my local dealer (and others) run VIN numbers and I've talked to AMG service. The one thing that has been stressed is (1) proper maintenance and (2) the value of a warranty. Of course, in the process, I've been a real pest to others. I always over-research anything I buy and then end up spending more than I originally intended. Looks like the H1 will be another example of that.

Hopefully, I will seal a deal tomorrow on a 2002 with only 5,000 miles and a full 3 years of warranty either factory or factory combined w/ GM extended. Its gone straight from a dealer to a wholesaler with no individual owner to beat it up. It is essentially new. I think my patience is going to pay off.

This is getting exciting.
