Default transfercase problem

I have a 1996 h1 and I was four wheeling the other day now I think I have a transfercase problem. Its hard to shift into 4*4 and back but it will drive but it makes loud intermittent loud bangs under the center of the vehicle when I pick up speed. It sounds like something is going to bust at any time. Could this be the transfer case or a differencial problem? Thanks!

I think the t-case shifting hard is common. The bangs.... I never had a transfer case go bad yet, but I imagine it would be more of a grind, clunk, boom as stuff sheared off and it chewed itself to pieces. Is it more of a clunk? That might be in your transmission. It could also be a misfire in the engine if you've got a gasser (maybe on a diesel too, I don't know).

I'm sure someone else will speak up.

Hi. It is a diesel. In low 4*4 it does not do that. In high or high 4*4 it will make a loud clunk or crack sound directly under the vehicle. If I take off slow it will do it every half a block or so. If I punch the gas it makes the noise about every 5 feet. It gets extremely loud like gears are busted. Thanks!

Have a look at your transmision mount. it may either be lose or broke. also check all the bolts holding the trans to the engine. I've only ever heard of a t-case going bang once then you know there broke, cos the only way to move after that is to get towed.

Those shifter are ultimately connected inside the transfer to cheap nylon (what I call half bushings) that wear out and what you are probably hearing alot of rattling. Also tighten up the Oil cooler lines going into the transfer, there are two nuts that pull the oil cooler out of the way of that main chain that transfer power. If the problem is persisting disconnect all drive shafts and twist while you shift into 4X4. If you feel any grinding just stop what you are doing and split the case and take a look. I will be around. Carbine.
