Default Thinking of getting one

Well we have a H3 and I've always wanted a H1. I'm wondering what to look out for when buying a used one. I saw a 92 today special edition with only 5000miles!! Looked sweet but it was already sold when I got there!!!

I'm around Toronto,On so there aren't as many as you guys have in the States!

that would have been a nice one to have espiaclly in that color, looks like the military humvee. Keep an eye out online, and i would also recommend going to the dealer and seeing if they could locate you one, or notify you if they get one.

GAH! Too expensive! Those are cool, and being the 1992 is unique, but I have been told that the 3-speed is no good if you want to do anything other than wheel the truck. So you're going to want to look for at least a 1994 and newer with the 4-speed. If you get into the turbo-diesels, the engine MUST be a replacement for the 1990's models. The originals failed very frequently. The VLCO's are cool (open-top, half-doors) but the plastic windows are apparently difficult to see out of at night. Finally, unless you have a big bank account, you've got to do all your own work on the truck. Already, I probably would have amassed about $3,000 in shop work, but I'm spending maybe $700 doing it on my own, if that much.

Good luck. Contact me if you have any questions. I have some answers, and some experience.

Thanks for the tips! I like doing as much as I can on vehicles and with a H1 since they are built tough I see less breakdowns as you would on regualr built vehicles. My area makes it limited to locate one at a reasonable price but since I have the OK from the wife now I can really look! I've left my number with one of the dealerships but buying private I'd save on taxes up here.

Keep the info coming and I'll absorb like a sponge!

So I shouldn't get an older year than 98? I'm thinking the older ones might be easier to work on and less $$$. Should I stay away from lots of KMS. I would imagine you can get many many years out of them. My brother still has a 1986 F150 we use from time to time!

KMS?

My 1994 is a great truck. I think he just meant you can get a GMPP on newer trucks, which some people like (it's like a new vehicle warranty essentially).

On the 1994, there is one computer, and it controls the transmission, so it is easy to work on for sure. Runs great too for being 13 years old. Should go many more years with some TLC.

If you are looking for something specific, I can start looking for you. PM me. We ship worldwide, so I don't see it being a problem getting a truck to you in Canada.

Older is fine and Blue's is in good shape, basically the H1 requires alot of regular maintainence and as long as you will do some of the work yourself you will be fine. If you plan to go to the dealer every time it will cost you and you will feel like it is always in the shope.
1. get carfax
2. have the motor checked, some early H1's had block problems
3. get the desiel, the gas burner is a total pig
4. get to know the area dealer and meet the H1 service tech. He will be you best friend for problems and find out how to order parts direct from AM General.

I'm looking for the wagon version. There are a few Turbo desiel ones but from what I've read there's engine issues. The regular would be fine for me anyway. The slantback would be my next choice. Rear storage is always a nice touch! I will work on as much as I can myself and I know someone who is a mechanic that can do work for me on the side.

I'll keep doing research and join more forums as well. Just wish there were more around. There's one I've seen in my area. Not sure on the year but is a grey wagon. I may just go up and see if they'd want to sell!!

What do you guys think about this one? A bit modded up but it may be in the price range if the wife ok's it! Just talked to the guy and it's a friend of his who takes very good care of it! It's the last one on the page.

/ BY 1.6= 92,OOO MILES

I just looked at a 93 today. I've passed it hundreds of times and now that I'm looking to buy I stopped by to check it out and talk to the owner. He has 43,000kms (26,875miles) and said he loves it and would sell it unless it was to get another one!

I also foun d a Military one today just and hour from me with 2600miles! 92' and it's sold too!!! This would have been a nice project humvee to have!!Crap! Either they are too expensive or sold!!!

Found a nice one, but it's 6 hours from me. I'll call during the day and see if it's still up for sale. If so the wife and I will be making a trip out there on the weekend!

Well I called and it's still there!! The only thing I'm a bit worried about is it sold as is! I'll have a 10 day permit to drive it back from Quebec to Ontario and then I'll have to get safety and emmisions test done on it. I just dont want the 6 hour drive there be a waste! Not to mention if I do buy it the wife will have to drive my car back! or we take her H3!

The good news is that the KMS are good and it has some nice features from what I've read. I have the VIN so I'll get a history search done on it.

There will be some sleepless nights before Saturday and last night was the first!

I'm glad I did a search on it through autocheck. This is what came up!!!

Problem Found! AutoCheck's database for this 1995 Hummer H1 (137YA8335SE163790) found history events that indicate a significant automotive problem. These problems can indicate previous car damage, theft or other significant problems.

Problems Checked Results Found

Good point!

I guess I'll just scout around and see what I can find. If I was looking a few weeks ago then I'd already have one. Now I'll be patient about it. There's a really nice one for $54K Cad, lots of stuff done to it, maybe I'll check it out if the owner calls me up.

It's all based on timing I guess!
