Default GPS Cobra 4000 and Other Toys

Cobra 4000

I just got the Cobra 4000 last week and I Love it. I know a lot of people swear by Garmin, However, the Cobra 4000 works great for me. For starters the screen is over 5 inches! The only Garmin that comes close to that it the one that costs like $1400. I got my Cobra for only $599.

So far I have used it to find restaurants and maybe routes I have not thought of that might be faster to locations I have been to before. If you don't have a GPS unit that will do this, it's way cool. You can be anywhere and find the closest restaurant or gas station. You aren't supposed to find things on it while you are driving, but I spent some time with it and I can find locations really fast.

The other thing that I really like about it is it has a trail maker. So if you go off road, you can tell it to save the trail you are making. When we went to Hollister, I used it track everywhere we went. Also, when you are done, the red trail (as it appears on the screen) stays there. So if you are ever in that location again, you can see the trail that you made (You can even shut off this feature or edit the trails that you have made).

The Cobra 4500 has traffic updates. I would not use this feature so I didn't pay the money to have it. Might be nice for the city though.

I also got some PIAA lights for the front Rockers for the side and cage for the bottom. All dealer installed.

Does the Cobra use XM Traffic for it's traffic info? I have XM Traffic and it is nice to have. Got to make sure they have coverage in your area though. BTW, toys are looking good

Really nice toys. I like the PIAA look in the photo's. Have you used them or are they bling?

Very nice Bully. I'll have to take a closer look at that GPS next time.

On the lights, it looks like they just drilled thru the BG. No tabs?

Sewie, Yes, they just bolted it right through the bar. The had to order brackets for the H2 though.

EDT, so far I have tried the lights but I have not "used" them yet. Some light off road driving at night to test em out would be fun. They actully do make a big difference so far.

Only place Garmin excels over other GPS units is in their hand held devices (such as the 60csx) that use the SiRF III GPS chip. For onroad use, where the SiRF III chip is not required for almost instant coverage under almost any type of condition, any of the units made by Magellan, Lowrance, Cobra, etc., are great. Most of the software comes from one of two sources.
The on road units can be off by quite a bit, but they are programmed to show location on the closest road. The hand helds are where you need extreme detail and there are NO roads to lock onto.

So, nice setup on the cobra.

Here's the product detail for the GPS units I was comparing:

Cobra:
http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=...ct_id=442&id=1

Garmin:
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap378/index.jsp

The site says the Cobra 4000 is 799 retail. I got mine at Circuit City for $699 and then a $100 mail in rebate. It's also available at circuitcity.com

For the Cobra, it states there is no need to download maps from a computer. Is there a PC connection? If not, how do you upload map updates?
How is for revising routes using via points?

actully, yes there is a PC connection. It's a mini usb port. And I happen to already own one of the cables. I do however have to find an adapter to plug it into the wall. I have wireless interent w/ my laptop, but it would be easier to update the gps in the house.

I will let you know when I update it.

If they do offer map updates, then the Cobra looks like a hell of a deal.
