Intake Question

I was wondering if there was a difference between getting a K&N intake kit or just taking off the top part off the stock intake box and putting a K&N filter on it?

Has anyone tried it?

Does anyone know anything about the sound and the difference between the two?

I have the top part of my intake box off, and it has the sound of an aftermarket intake (throaty intake sound).
I like the sound, and was wondering if the K&N would be louder and if there would be more power than just having the top airbox part off.

Ok, I have had the k&n intake kit on my 06 H3. I have also ran a fram airhog filter in the stock air box. With the k&n intake kit, you get a little more get up and go, especially in the higher rpms. With just the upgraded filter, I have noticed only a little difference if any.

The big thing with the intake kit is, it removes the noise damper box and is a straighter flow through tube. The removal of the noise damper box definitely makes for a louder intake, but also helps with airflow.



The only concern I had with the intake setup was that the filter was not in a completely sealed area. So warmer air could get in the intake and possibly dirt and debris.

have you ever tried the stock intake without the top part?
does anyone know the difference in diameter from the stock intake tube and the k&n for the 06 year?

The intake tube and the K&n are the same diameter, they fit the same hole at the throttle body. The big difference is removing the noise dampening box and having a smooth interior of the tube.

I don't think taking the lid off would help, it would let more hot engine air into the intake. What some people have done is modify the connection of the air box to the quarterpanel? to have a larger inlet from outside to the air box.
