GM has just announced that they will be closing 9 North American factories and laying off 30,000 workers.

we need to get more competative, design vehicles that people want. Short of a Vette, H2 or an American truck, there is not much out there built in the U.S. that is worth looking at. This problem didn't happen overnight, the Managment was asleep at the helm and didn't want to admit they needed to do something, they think that people will just buy American, because it American. I hope they got the message now.

Yes GM and other dropped the ball but they do have saome cars worth looking at:

STS- We just got one, it's amazing!!! beats an E class hands down

solstice/saturn sky- unbelieveable car for under 25k

cadillac v-series is a valient effort against m-series and AMG.

Merry Fu*king Christmas. I know most of the plants are closing over the next couple of years but it still sucks that they announce this crap just before the Christmas season.

I have heard good things about the Saturn. Don't know much about the Cadillac, I had a friend that worked as a service manager for a Cadillac dealer in the south bay a couple of years ago, he didn't think much of the quality of the products then. I really hope they pick up the quality, I would like to see the US auto manufacturers compete with the rest of the world.
Hoe many miles do you have on your STS, I owuld be curious to see how it fairs over the years.

I had an STS for several years - put about 70k miles on it with NEVER a single glitch! I had looked at BMW, Jag, MB, etc., and I agree with Church - the STS beat 'em all! It's an outstanding car.

I know a couple of people that have Saturns and they love them. One is one her fourth one. Guess she has been happy since she keeps buying them.

So we need to train/educate our workforce to do the high valued work. Inovate.

This is no surprise.
GM has been asleep for years building round plastic cars.

Dodge and Ford kick their ass with inovation. I am an old Chevy man and would never consider anything but a GM. That was 30 years ago. That was the last time I even looked at a GM product other than the Hummer.

Today is now and I believe they have changed management--too late perhaps, as is the norm for GM.

Sorry GM lovers, I know you hate me and my side of the truth.

No doubt about the Malibu.

Americans, in general would be happy to buy American but not "just because" and certainly not to help out the UAW.

I hope GM gets it sh-it together.

Maybe I should finish my degree in Chemistry? Then I could go to work for GM convincing them to do a BioDiesel/Hybrid platform. Fawkers never listen and always wait for someone else to innovate.

Damn depressing.

What puzzles me most is you hear more and more American branded cars and parts made elsewhere and yet more Japanese & Korean branded cars are made here

Don't hate it, just don't see the merit in it. It took GM's Dmax to force Dodge and Ford to get with the program. Dodge has what, fifty six different cars, trucks, and SUVs wrapped around the same engine? Ford does what for it's upgraded trucks and SUVs? 5.4, 5.4, 5.4, 5.4 Bling, no extra horsepower, no better suspension, squat.

I was just down at the GMC/Pontiac dealer. Four different vehicles in the showroom floor, the GTO, the Pontiac Torrent, the Envoy Denali and the new Solstice, ALL awesome vehicles.

Look at the entire lineup for each maker, I'll take GM.

Guess it's all in how you look at the "truth".

GM's quality has gone up dramitcally in the last 2 years. I know because I'm not as busy as I used to be. Domestic cars are built very well and can compete with foreign cars. I'll admit many domestic cars are ugly, but so are the foreign ones in my opinion. What GM really needs is for the unions to go away, and just have a bunch of workers who want to work. I've seen first hand how unions are killing American companies. Look at what happened to the steel workers in the last 5 years.

I certainly wouldn't put all the blame for GM's problems on the unions but think they need to go or become realistic. One of our companies was union years ago and another was not. Same industry and same equipment but the union require almost twice the number of employees to do the same job. We ended up telling the employees that we wanted to keep that if they left the union they would have a job but if not we would close the company and take all the business to the other company and we would come out ahead. The good employees left the union and kept their jobs. Almost all of them ended up make more per hour because overhead went down let alone they didn't have any union dues anymore so it was a win win situation. Unions had their place 75 years ago but not so much now IMO but I am not looking from the side of a union employee.

My H2 is the first and last new GM product, other than another H2,ZO6 or CTS-V, I will ever buy. The build quality is piss poor. I get the fact that because there is no competition for this vehicle that there is no reason to do it right. But,other than specialty units, i.e. ZO6, CTS-V,H2, GM does not interest me at all.

Unions are the extreme nemisis of Walmart. Somewhere between Walmarts's stripping workers of full time hours+ benefits and unions paying some dork 25 bux an hour to tighten lug nuts has to be a happy medium.
