Default Any tips for visiting the US???

Hi!

My Dad, brother and I are visiting the US in October for two weeks. My brother and i have never been there yet. At the moment, i only
know that we will definately be in New York city and LA. While in LA, I am wanting to get a rental and visit a friend of mine in Las Vegas for a night or two.

Can anyone reccommend where else to visit or whatelse to do?

Most of what we do in the States, will be of my choice, as we will arrive there after a month and a half of travelling around Europe and doing the Formula 1 circuit, all chosen and planned by the guys.

There just seems like too much to choose from, for such a short space
of time!

Any tips or reccommendations would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks!

..also just a bit mroe off topic..just came back from Fiji, and surprised to
find that a friend of mine there had bought an H3, as a dealership there is now importing them.....if you know anythng about FJ or been there, you understand how random it is to see Hummers there!!..i met the President @ a garden party ( its a REALLY small country lol ) and even he has one, and he's like 80!..an awesome new arrival and difference to the Land Cruiser which dominates NZ and Fiji

There's a lot to do in those three cities to keep you busy. Especially Vegas. Maybe an extra day there with a side trip to the Grand Canyon.

Enjoy your trip.

Not certain what time of year however. NY is nice in September. Lower Manhattan features...
-Empire State Building
-Circle line tour of Hudson & East Rivers
A Statue of Liberty
B Brooklyn Bridge
C The awesome Metro skyline even w/o trade center
-SOHO South of Houston Street. Neat shops and historical places to walk around.

In general right now there are some great bargains. When I was in Manhattan last week there were a lot of international visitors buying all kinds of stuff. The exchange rate is really good now.

China town which is also downtown has outdoor shops and nice little restaurants. You wont believe your eyes. NYC is a great place to visit!

Rent a H3 when you come!

For short time stays the organized tours may be best...while in NYC you have to visit ChinaTown, walk down Canal Street to see the sites and IMO eat at 69 MOTT STREET...the best in town, nothing fancy but good food...

NY:

The planetarium rocks.
The Met shouldn't be missed.
Times Square is a riot.
I always try to catch a show.

LA:

Universal is actually kinda cool.
Disney is an American staple.
PCH makes for a cool drive.

Helicopter rides into the Grand Canyon from Vegas are a lot of fun.

In New York the first thing you should do is go to the apple store and buy a laptop and 5 ipods like everyone else does.
Some of the comments below are good but some are tourist traps you can do without

A Statue of liberty in Summer = Hot nasty death trap - Think auschwits of America. You wait out in a long line in thew sun, get on an overcrowded boat go to liberty island for a lot longer than you need to be on a small island. There's a small museum, a gift shop and an overpriced cafeteria you can't go into the Statue most times now and if you can its a tiny staircase inside a huge hot tin can filled with hundreds of others on the same staircase. Enjoy the view from the Circle line instead.
Adam is right Hayden Planeterium is pretty cool.
Chinatown is for American tourists looking to buy cheap designer knockoffs or things that are generally cheap and will fall apart in a few days. With the sucky dollar you can buypass chinatown and go for the real goods in SOHO, Meatpacking district, or midtown 5th ave, madison in the 50's and 60's. If you want a great chinese meal though go to the Peking Duck House in Chinatown and get a duck it is out of this world.

Central park and the columbus center are nice.
If you post when your coming I can give you some better suggestions, for NYC.

Between NY, Vegas, and LA you'll probably use up two weeks, easily.

if you plan on visiting Disney or Universal come to Florida and spend a day or two up in Orlando the Universal and Disney here is not only bigger, but better and blows the other ones away....D.C. is also a cool place to visit if your interested in any of that stuff.

I've visited those three cities and they're really GREAT !! Definetely check the Empire State building. View is amazing.
Los Angeles : Santa Monica is really nice, Beverly Hills, ...
Las Vegas : WOW ! 24/24 fun !! gotta stay in one of the big hotels on the Strip (I stayed at the Mirage).

Are you in Belgium during your Euro trip ? Otherwise let me know, I'll show you around.

In LA one of my favorite resturants in china town is the Hop Li at Alpine and Hill st. I'm not sure if he still works there but an asian guy named Warren always took good care of use, if your not sure what you want tell him things you normally like and he'll make a suggestion that has always been great, also I've always enjoyed Catalina island you can take the ferry or a helicopter out of Long Beach to Avalon.

Enjoy, Steven
