Also dont forget that your car will be in the shop for a day maybe longer. Is the other party going to supply you with a rental car for the period of time your car is in the shop like the insurance company would? Maybe you have other vehicles to drive and its a non issue?

ok, here's an update....

Decided to go the police report/no insurance route. Motorcycle rider has no motorcycle insurance (not required in WA), so I either file uninsured or take cash. He agreed to meet me @ my house, showed up in a high-end mercedes, had a $500 check and a full-scope liability waiver - included that it was his fault, I have no responsibility, his $500 is to cover deposit on repair, does not waive my right to non-collision repair, etc.

He had no insurance...that is the key - either he gets screwed or he pays full up front. I'm pretty comfortable now, he's been up front, has all the paperwork, is paying cash. I can try and screw him, or I can trust that he's on the up-and-up and hope that karma has treated me right today.

Oh, yeah, and I'm gonna repair the damage myself ($290.70 in parts) and pocket the rest. I saved him the insurance issues, he saved me the labor - a good deal all around.

ok, blast away (RYD and others )

Glad to hear the positive update, evl! It certainly sounds like this guy is on the up and up.

Apparently many of us on the board have been screwed too many times and just aren't willing to trust someone they don't know when they say they'll get it taken care of. It's just such a screwy world we live in. People's word often means nothing these days.

Ya picked the right guy to run into you.

Yeah sometimes a little faith in the goodness of folks will go a long way... Had a guy rear end me a couple of years back and we had the same arrangement of sorts.. He was a bodyman though and did the work.. And did it right.. Still ended up costing him about $2000.. Had to replace the bumper, tailgate, associated trim pieces and a good bit of painting.. He had the truck for 3 days and even got a demo/loaner from the dealer he worked at for me to drive..

So another update (yes, another slow day at work )

Took the rear flare off (two 7mm bolts in the doorjam + clips + two 10mm bolts inside the flare near the rear rear plastic corner cover). Of the 3-4 clips, only two were left, the others had gone to clip heaven. The plastic flare was bent forward (you can see it in the original pics).

I put one clip in the front, one in the rear (they are the pop-in style clips) and tweaked the flare to unbend it - there was no crease, so I was hoping it would just bend back. IT DID! Popped the clips in, retightened bolts and it's back to it's original spot - no bends! From 5' away you can't tell there is any damage (and the scrape marks fit in well with all the other scrapes on the truck).

So at least until I get around to fixing it, it looks serviceable and I can keep the flare for a spare. Plastic is cool!

Note to Bebe: I can't imagine what would have happened if I'd had your setup - he would have cheesegrated on the right rear ladder and probably ended up in a lot worse situation (of course I wouldn't have needed any repairs )

That's great. All "good is dumb" kidding aside, you did it right ... got all his info, filed a police report to cya and gave the guy a chance to make good. And then he did.

It's like some kind of fairy tale ending ... am I in the right forum?

I say he should file.
