Re: Best All Around Tire?
I was told when I went through the Hummer Driving Academy, if you use the Traction Control while driving in deep mud, it will give you just the right amount of tire spin to help clean and free up the mud from your tires.

Re: Best All Around Tire?
Yeah, I was wondering about that, in the sand I had Stabilitrak on one day and off one day (in 4 HI Locked ). I was surprised how much BETTER it did with OFF than on. I know sand and mud are opposite ends of the spectrum but I was just shocked on how different the vehicle behavied.

Wet dirt clogged up the treads and turned the tires into slicks. Where there wasn't sticky mud... NO ISSUES. Where there was sticky mud... Slip Slidin Away.
One of the Tacos had the Cooper STT's on and I've got to tell you. That truck had zero issues with mud and climbed rock like a billy goat.
Take a serious look at the Cooper STT's before you make up your mind. Thats my $.02... Take it for what its worth.

Anyone run Cooper STTs in the snow?
I'm huge fan of BFG ATs offroad and in the snow and put them on my blazer, 4runner and wife's land cruiser. It would take a solid gold recommendation on their snow performance for me to ditch my ATs for them.

Re: Best All Around Tire?
I'm looking at probably getting the 35" BFG All Terrain T/A's again. I'm at 60K, and they still have some tread left (~15%), so I would almost like to get them again just because they last so long. Perhaps I'll go 37"...
What other tires would be good for on road snow? I'm looking at the TrXus A/T and M/T and Procomp A/T. The TrXus Mud Terrains seem to have a lot of siping...

Re: Best All Around Tire?
I'm thinking about going w/ Maxxis bighorns in 255/85-16 (33.3" od).
the narrow tire works better in snow and some mud.
they also have a 305/70-16 which gives u a 12.5X33" tire.
I've had good luck w/ Maxxis tires and usually the price is real good, the 255s are $540 out the door.

I know a guy who runs the Truxus MT's and is VERY happy with them. They seem to handle mud well and as an all around tire seem great.
As for the Truxus AT... Unless you're driving in sand all the time I would avoid. Mud? Those things will pack in and again you've got zero traction. Here's a REVIEW.

For an H2 take a look at the Cooper STT or the Pro-Comp MT. Pro-Comp is coming into their buy 3 get 1 free season and the 37" MT is a brand new design. Due to this the Pro-Comp could be a difficult tire to pass on.
Thats my $.02. Take it FWIW.

Re: Best All Around Tire?
Looks like best price on the Procomps is ~$250 each, with the get 3, 1 free deal. I don't know if the MT's have enough siping.
Thanks for the suggestions. My biggest area of concern is snow performance on road with good off-road performance, since I end up seeing snow about 5-6 months of the year when I'm up in NY.
Eww, Procomps are made by Cooper... Too many recalls on those.
BFG's are cheapest at Wally World, ~$230 installed.
I want to ask, if I have the tires mounted to the rims, and balanced, is there any reason why I can't just take the old rims off the vehicle, and put the new ones on myself? Does that have to be done at the shop?

Re: Best All Around Tire?
The Cooper STT has siping out the wazoo (thats a tech-nic-al turm ). MarineHawk and Alan06SUT have them on their H2's and from what I understand are VERY happy with them. CO Hummer has the new Pro-Comps.
Good luck with your search.
OBTW - There's no reason other than convenience why your truck needs to be there to have new tires mounted.

Re: Best All Around Tire?
Thanks for the info Ipedog. I'll have to post some pics if I get something exciting installed...
I have also looked at the Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips today. I've found them comparably priced. Now I've got another choice!

Re: Best All Around Tire?
Ok, well I met a Land Rover fanatic today at Costco, and he was running the TrXus Mud Terrains. He said they are hard to balance, and don't wear very well... He had about 5 weights on each rim. And with only about 8,000 miles, they had worn significantly. So I'm not so sure about them.
But he also was like, "Your Hummer needs significant modifications, like a new front end and steering gear."
