Default Accident, what can my friend do?

So my friend was in a parking lot, and parked - this large SUV was backing up and slowly backed up into the side of his car. It left a dent, maybe like 5 inches across. He decided to be a good sport about it, and only took the guy's first name and phone number. Damage was around $300 or so, I think.

Now..he called the guy and the guy answered and said he'll meet up with him to give him the $300. What happened if the guy decides not to pay or show? Is there anything he can do? I don't think he took down the license plate information or anything, just the phone number.

Is he screwed, or can he track the guy down with his cell #?

$300 bucks...hmmm...the last door ding someone left me cost more than that and it was out of my pocket. Hopefully you get the dude to fix your $hit.

You know now that I think about it. You could always check and see if any surveillance cameras in the area filmed the alleged incident or can at least ID the suspect vehicle via the plate number.

Have him meet at the police station where it happened to pay. If he doesn't show, your buddy can fill out a report right then and there.

I've watched enough court shows to know that you never ever just take someone's information without calling the police and filling out a report. Not to mention only getting a first name. However, what's done is done. Here's the search for looking up cell phone numbers in reverse. Some ask for money to give you information, some are free. He should try that perhaps, at least it's a start. And next time, tell him to file a report.

I'm sorry but this whole thing is just silly. Seriously, if I only took down a complete stranger's first name and #, I would not expect a dime. I'd kiss that money goodbye.

Why bother when my insurance can make all the calls. That's why I make that payment every month so they can hassle with it. Probably not $300 worth of damage, but a lot more.

There was only one time someone hit me and I didn't call my insurrance. A guy hit my bumper in a truck that I had that I didn't care about. He had 500 bucks on him and asked me not to call my insurance. I took the money and never fixed small dent in the bumper.

Sounds like your friends a trusting soul...

Probably a decent human being.

The other person sounds like a loser.

Might be best to wright it off as a lesson in current life in this state.
