Default smoke on the water?

Thanks to the warm temps (two days of 60 degree temps in January?) melting the 15 +/- inches of snow, and the 3 days of rain, we have quite a bit of standing water here in SW MI. I went through a few puddles the other day, nothing more than 12 inches or so, and there was an awful lot of smoke coming out from under both wheel wells. Is this normal? It didn't last very long, maybe 6 seconds or so, and stopped after a few feet. I thought I smelled maybe a few seconds of something burning, but it might have been my imagination.

Now if the engine were really hot, I'd think it was the cold water hitting a hot engine, but the truck had only been running for 5-10 minutes before I limped through the mud and water.

Good, I won't worry about it anymore, as I love to find the puddles and splash through 'em.
