Totally right f5. It's about moving metal and the marketing folks spend millions on their guess. People talk D all the time but don't buy them in mass. Guess why your radio station never takes requests and plays the same 500 songs over and over. Same answer, numbers.

The new diesels don't stink or rattle and they're not much louder than a similar displacement gasoline engine. Diesel H3s are available... just not in North America. I would love to see it otherwise but the Marketing Gurus of GM have spoken and we all know how infallible they are.

Not to dispel anyone from getting a Diesel, but those of you that have driven or have a diesel, do you live in colder climates, and go to areas where you can?t garage or have a power source to heat the block? I guess a aftermarket warmer would work, but that would be my biggest hang-up in getting a diesel.

My truck sees more snow & ice than mud...

i am late to the party, but as i have said before on this board i would love a diesel h3. i would rather have a diesel than an alpha and i imagine that a diesel would be priced at or above the same amount as the v8 alpha.
so you can add me to the list!
does anyone know where i could find the performance and torque specs of the h3 diesels that are avaialable in europe?

3.0 lt turbo-diesel (from Isuzu) is the base engine for the UK version of the H3.

I found some specs on that 3.0L diesel on wikipedia here. According to their info, it makes 168 HP @ 4000 rpm and 258 ft-lbs @ 1800 rpm.

You know, I thought I would love a diesel in the H3, but if this is the choice, my interest is kind of fading. The 3.7L I5 already makes 220 lb-ft @ 2200 rpm, and a little more pedal gives me 20 more at 5600.

With Adventure package gearing, the I5's torque curve isn't a limitation offroad. So if I have to trade most of my HP and high end torque to gain 40 ft-lbs of torque at the bottom end, it's probably not worth it. Maybe if it was just my weekend wheeling toy, but not as a daily driver.

Thanks for the wiki-link!

To my consideration, these stats aren't a problem for a daily driver unless most of your driving is on highways. Mine isn't. All that torque is available while you're tooling around town or when crawling over rocks. If anything, that extra torque would make the H3 a better vehicle for both town and offroad.

As far as for highway duty, it would take a big dose of hp to overcome the brick-like aerodynamics we all love. Besides... who needs a speeding ticket?

When Im not playing in my H3, I drive a Dodge Cummins 3/4 ton diesel, what noise? huh? I have doubled the HP and torque. It's a six cylinder. Still, if you want to blast off you have to hold the brake and wait for it to build up boost and then launch!! ha ha
A baby diesel in a H3 would not have that all American throttle response. Like why some people had to have a V-8.Offroading it would seem to not be as responsive without reving up too much. I have seen some H1's and on rocky obstacles on hills they have to get wound up pretty good to build torque. On the highway Im not sure it would satisfy the American heavyfoot species. If you think the I-5 is sluggish............lets see dual turbos, nah they still have to spool up $$$
With the mods I have done my I-5 performs lots better.

I just finished working on projects to upgrade and expand several low sulfur diesel facilities here on the Gulf Coast. This newly refined diesel will contain 50 ppm sulfur compared to 500 ppm in the previous type. It will have a big effect in decreasing pollutants from buses and large trucks.

Clean diesel engine technology is the wave of the future. They are clean, quiet, torquey, with 30% better fuel economy and much simpler technology than hybrids. These are not your Father's diesels. Europe has been on this clean diesel for several years already and the Germans have literally millions of miles of proven on the road usage. The Japanese are gearing up for clean diesel engine production as well.

Ford and GM seem to be acting like if they ignore this issue, it will go away. I sure hope they don't get left behind on this one.

I traded a Dodge 3/4 ton 4X4 w. Cummins turbo-diesel for my H3... and my wife's Volksdragon TDI has the old 1.9 litre turbo-diesel with a 5 speed.

Better fuel economy... less emissions... huge torque... win, win, win!

Why not harness the atom and use that power to be ahead of the curve of petrochemical depletion. But seriously with technology advancing at the rate it is who knows what engine options will be there when you are ready to trade/upgrade your H3... Stay tuned certainly the General is
