Are the later model OEM tie rods larger diameter and stronger?
Have more people broken the earlier tie rods?
Maybe we can upgrade to the later tie rods?

Could a simple clamp-on reinforcment sleeve be fabricated?
That way you wouldn't need to un-bolt anything or re-align the front end

What does the Alpha sterring system look like? Would that system work on the older H3s

Maybe we can upgrade to the later tie rods? They're basically the same.

I doubt they've beefed up the steering at all for the Alpha. We're stuck waiting for someone to come up with something aftermarket.

If they allowed the 16mm to replace a 14mm, they would have purged the 14mm out of service parts. However, another reason to not purge the parts could be that you would have to replace both inner and outer with the 16mm. So, I don't know, and don't believe 2mm will make that much of a difference.)
Have more people broken the earlier tie rods? (Right now I would say YES, but only due to the fact the earlier tie rods are on all 2006, and 2007 models up to VIN 108975. After 108976, the vehicles had the larger 16mm installed. Since these are not normally replaced under warranty for breakage, I have no figures on how many have been replaced.)

Basically, the same. No specs yet, but since tire rods usually break due to stress from hits directly on them, or hits into the side of a wheel, or pressure from running on the side of the wheel, I would guess they will be the same size. I can say, the steering system looks identical, but I didn't measure anything.

The older 14mm inner/outer rods are being replaced with 16mm rods. If one (inner or outer) is replaced, the other must also be replaced.

So do you think my new rack came with 14mm or 16mm?

Chances are the new ones, but only way to tell would be to measure the diameter of the links, or see if there is an eight digit part number...outer - 15907712.

Now, I don't mind that the newer rods are larger, I also don't mind that if you replace one (either inner or outer) you have to replace the other. However, I am having a hard time locating the new rods for my trip.
To say I'm a bit peed at some people right now, is an understatement.
I should know more on Tuesday, when I return to work and have a long conversation with a parts' engineer.

The reason I noticed my tie rods were different, is when I went to pick up my truck after the rack was replaced, my new tie rods were black, with a yellow stripe.

I have not looked to see if the new rods are black, been a little busy putting out other fires.
How I found out about the new rods being back serviced is I ran across the chassis service engineer manager yesterday and asked him to explain why there were over three hundred back-ordered inner tie rods and about 150 back-ordered outer tie rods for the H3. His response was GM is not having any 14mm outer made, and only a limited number of inners, and the dealers should be ordering the new 16mm rods. Well, the parts manual does not state this, or at least my electronic copy dated May 1, does not state that. He will be looking into it.
I then had a friend run a parts check and guess what, per the parts' system, there are no new ones in stock either (WTF). So, it appears everyone, including me have taken today as a vacation day, and Monday is a holiday, therefore on Tuesday, I will be on the phone first thing to the chasis dude and the dude in charge of these tie rods for service parts.
Now, I have to get back to my production of some front end brackets for a Hi-Lift jack.
