Paragon's correct. A 100% grade means the rise and the run are equal - i.e., the hill climbs 10 feet for every 10 feet it moves horizontally - i.e., 45%.
A 40% grade means that the grade rises 4 feet for every 10 feet of horizontal travel (the rise is 40% of the run) - not that the angle is 40% of anything.
The ArcTangent of 0.40 is the angle of a 40% grade in degrees. See http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/Hbase/ttrig.html

I don't have my HP calculator with me but this web calculator thingy (http://www.1728.com/trigcalc.htm) says that the ArcTangent of 0.40 is 21.801 Degrees. I'm not sure if that calc is accurate, but, either way, it's awfully close to what Paragon is saying (he did say "about" 22.9 degrees) and awfully far from 36 degrees.

Thanks for the math education fellas. I may seem sarcastic but I really do appreciate it.

I mounted the Lev o Gauge in the center of the windshield along the liner, looks great and works great. I also mounted one on the door panel just above and in front of the exit handle. I can see that one fine and the one on the windsheild can be sen by everyone in the vehicle. Velcro would have been a nice touch but I used the two sided tape that came on the gauge. I used a level to make sure the vehicle was square and then stuck it to the points I wanted it. they may be a little off but again, these are tools and do not replace common sense. Besdies, I'm a little off as well so it seems like a good fit to me.
