How many people with a wireless connection check to see how many unsecured wireless connections there are in your immediate neighborhood.
I'm currently running on my neighbors unsecured wireless setup, and he doesn't know. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I know he has DSL, so if my comcast setup goes down, I now have a way to stay connected.
In all, there are five different unsecured wireless networks I can see, but only three have a signal strong enough to connect to. There is only ONE secured wireless connection on my list, and that is mine.
Amazing how dumb people can be with their computer information.
Well, time to jump over to my wireless, even with Norton's, PC Doctor I don't like running non-secured.

Yep, I've noticed quite a few unsecured wireless networks in my area. I don't use them for anything important, because there is a chance someone is watching, but it was nice when I first moved in and was waiting on cable internet to get installed.

It's the best when I goto friends apartments, there are a ton of open networks. It's fun to print stuff on random printers. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I recently upgraded to a pre-n wireless router, I think I gave my whole block a wireless network, but it's secured though.

Google for a program called "Netstumbler". Its free and will really give you an idea how many are out there. Its a great program for your laptop.

There are about 9 unsecured networks in my little community. Two of which I can pickup from my house.

Never sent random stuff to their printers though.. Thats funny!

My rep for an electronics distributor that we use covers from Orlando to Melbourne then up to Jacksonville. Took him several months but now knows locations within blocks of all his customers that if he is running a little early he can stop to check email, download files or whatever he needs. They are on networks for everything from homes to coffee shops to hotels. Just pull into the parking lot or out front on the street and pull out the laptop http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

There are atlaest 5 wireless networks that I can lock onto in my complex. I must thank them for their service while I was waiting for my internet hook up! I still use them on my PDA, as I won't go wireless myself...Don't want some stranger in on my Dime! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yea it's common in most urban areas. You don't need to go to Starbucks.

I have a hill behind my house and i took a parabolic dish attached to my laptop up there to check last summer. The dish was putting out 32 db and I was picking up wireless connections out around 8 miles. I logged a few hundred connections in no time. The dish I made has a point to point range of 52 miles, just need to find a place with 52 line of sight miles to test it.

I get 2 on my cul-de-suck, but secure mine. About a year and half ago, I went on a monthlong trip to Alaska, and just used my laptop to hack unsecured wireless networks.

The most interesting?

A Target store in BF British Columbia
Parked next to a house somewhere in Whitehorse

The best?

At a gas station in Cantwell Alaska, 100+ miles from anywhere else - how do you even get high-speed internet out there? Amazing...
