I have the GOBI Stealth rack and at the back of the rack on both sides there are two square shaped cut-outs. I called GOBI and they said those cut-outs are for future add-ons for the rack. Anyone know what those square cut-outs are going to be used for?

They look about the right size to "safely stabilize" a 12 pack of beer.

I am envious. My Gobi rack lacks this feature.

Ok TIM! What is it for?

I always figured the holes were to make room for lights and related wires?

I noticed the PICS on the GOBI site of the Stealth Rack don't have the cut-outs so I called GOBI and they said all the new racks are coming with the cut-outs now.
Here is the PIC on the GOBI site:

IT's for lights. All the new holes back there are about 12" X 4".

Tim,

You're scaring me.

I know the whole Hummer thing... make it big... NO! Really big.... etc....

But what find of light needs a 12" x 4" cutout?

Those holes are much bigger than that. I just measured them and they are 14.5" x 11"

14.5"x11" Lights = 18" LCD or plasma screens for the video freaks.

Your talking the flat (walking top area) cut outs right? could it be for fuel cans?

Yeah, the top (walking to area) holes. I guess it could be for fuel cans but then it seems to me that the bottom of the fuel can would be resting on the actual roof and that can't be a good thing for the paint.

It will not rest on the roof after you add the $5892.00 Jerry can rack adaptors from Gobi! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This picture right from GOBI's site seems to support the lighting theory.

It seems like the space allocated for lights is a bit excessive though.

Take a look at teh back of teh Stealth Rack. It already has a mount for rear lights:

Ok, the original concept of these racks were for the Forest Service and they have a custom fuel can that would hook into that spot with a bracket. all the new racks have much smaller openings. Some racks were even closed off back there at the request of some customers.

That pic in the last post is how the new ones look. There is just enough room for you to run the wires and loom up through there.

Any idea if it's possible to get the bracket and custom fuel cans to fill in this whole?

We have a different kit to make that work, but it does not use those holes in the back.

You use a set of cargo buckles, DELTA hooks, and fuel or H2O Cans. These are military grade and will not leak or crack. The cargo buckles are sweet. you mount them onto the side of your rack. They do not add any height. I drove with two full H2O cans from Denver to Moab, a week worth of off roading, and drove back. Those cans didn't budge and took seconds to take on and off to refill.
I wouldn't want anything in those holes on the rack. The paint would be scratched up if not done properly. If you need something to fill those holes, I think something could be made.

I will be ordering the cargo buckle system very shortly. How do they attach to the rack?
This next question might take this thread on a detour but what ideas do you have to fill those holes? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

GOBI (http://www.gobiusa.com/store.php?crn=94&rn=402&action=show_detail)

Ok, click on that link. that's the whole kit. Clock on the Install PDF. It installs quick. I figured, I give you the link rather than explain it. I'd just keep talking and talking and talking.
