You need to post things like this in the H2 section. Your down in the dead zone here. I think they made a picture about this section of the forum. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I get about 12 with my 98 turbo diesel and Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip tires (37x12.5x16.5). Are you looking to get an H1 Johnny?

12 to 13 when I run with off-road setup (38" PJ Dirt Grips). Much better, 15 or 16 when running stock GSA's.

highway numbers. Not a lot of stop and go traffic.

I am looking at a 99 open top. Everyone is telling me to get a 98 but I prefer the ABS and adding a locker

I am getting 13-18 dependent on the wind and tire pressure, generally closer to 13-16 mpg. good luck in your search for an H1, it is truly a great experience to just own one.

I have a 98 and love the thing, its a great truck. My truck is unfortunatly spends all of its time on road right now. For highway I use I have to say the 99 would be a better buy, the 98 takes a bit of time to learn to drive on icy roads and has a tendancy to slide around if your not really conservitive on the throttle. But, at the same time with a little practice on bad roads the 98 will drive around as nicely as a 99, and be a superior off road truck. Its all a matter of preferance. I have got to say though, the only thing better then a 98 or 99 HUMMMER is a HUMMER H1 with a WARRENTY. Do yourself a favor Johnny get a truck with a warrenty it will save you a ton of money. A case in point example is my 98. I have had it almost a year now (oct 2003) and have around 6 grand in repairs (the previous owner did not take good care of my truck, which is why anyone buying an H1 should never buy one without service records like I did). Tomarrow its going to the shop (no not the dealer) for three engine codes and a tranmission that is not functioning correctley. Hopefully it wont be a huge deal, but say I need a new transmission the cost of that and the labor will put me over another 3K at least. Bringing my sunken cost over 9 grand in a year.

I appreciate all the feedback. I looked at the 99 yesterday and was not impressed at all. Back to the books, I guess. Where did you guys find your trucks? Did anyone go from a H2 to a H1? Was it a good move? I am not real sure at this moment. I went wheeling with about 30 H1's and a few H2's this past weekend and the H1's had a hard time on the sand dunes. They kept getting stuck at the top. They couldn't get enough speed to reach the top. I on the other hand had no problem. There wasn't anything they could do that I couldn't do. What do you guys think?

I really think you have to drive the H1, and if you already have and your still questioning which one you like better i say stay with the h2. I Had an H2 for about 6 months then drove an H1(dealership gave me one for 24 hours) and from that day on i was hooked. I recommned seeing if the dealership will let you test drive one for an extended period of time, and by the end of that you will know which one you like better.

The issue with Sand Dunes in general is speed, speed, speed.

If the H1 is in 4 Low, you aren't going to get the speed you want or need. 4 High should get you by with plenty.

What I really want to do (next project) is put a Detroit locker in the rear. This way, I can leave it in High (4WD unlocked High) and blast thru the dunes.

Johnny,

If you would like to hook up with Roberto and myself on weekend at Attica I will let you drive my truck. This would give you some feel for what it is like.

Dave,

Thank you so much for the offer. That would be real cool. I have driven the H1 around on the street. but never wheeling. I think, I will run up to Lockhart and take one for a spin to refresh my memory again.

I have the factory rear Detroit locker (on the original sticker, it was an option for $138). Makes you wonder why they just didn't put them in all the trucks. It "clinks" into & out of lock by itself.

On the last now run, I ran with chains on the front tires in 4H most of the time - it was nice to have a little more momentum going up the steep, slick hills. I imagine the same is true on sand dunes.
