We've had previous posts regarding what we compared the H2 against when shopping for an SUV/Truck, but what do you think you'd be driving if the H2 did NOT exist?

Going exclusivly off road or for regular use. The beauty of the H2 is it fits both niches.

I like the looks of some of the 4x4 pick-ups, but I'm not sure how the off-road capability is with the light weight rear end. That's what I was looking at when I saw the H2.

The Land Rover Defenders are pretty good off-road, and the Cadillac Escalade is like driving a couch, so it depends on what we mean. If the H2 didn't exist, I probably would have kept my Tahoe Z71.

I was looking at the 4WD 2500 Avalanche with the 8.1 engine.

I had someone driving an Avalanche stop at a gas station where I was filling up just to talk to me about my H2. He was disappointed that just after he had purchased his truck, the H2 came out.

If there was no such thing as a Jeep, I'd be driving a built K5 Blazer.

If I wanted a late model, I'd be driving a pre-'02 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton reg cab shortbed, or 3/4 ton ext. cab shortbed.

Pickups do just fine offroad.

When I say built-up, this is what I have in mind. I took this from Jeepforum.com and happen to like this setup - TJ with 4" Lift and 33s. I'd run ARB Air Lockers front and aft and roll the black steelies.

Yeah, that's a nicely set up Jeep. Looks like a Sahara Edition.


With f&r lockers, that thing will go just about anywhere.

I don't care much for the red coils though. Red coils means either Rancho or Skyjacker. For TJ's, Rubicon Express is the only way to go.

Is that the same small-scale manufacturer that I see advertsising an 8" coilover system for WJs? Pretty wild setup from the pix I've seen.

Since your title indicated "4x4", thus Escalade is included. My 2nd choice is/was Cadillac Escalade or EXT. It is big and soft and nice. I would get the 4x4 and all options, even though with the exception of ski trips, 4x4 is totally irrelevant to me. I love the EXT look, but most likely would go with the Escalade SUV just because it is more useful. Judging by how many Escalades I see everyday, I am not alone.

SJ, a company called Rock Krawler is the one who has the 8" long arm WJ kit.

RE doesn't offer much for the WJ.

There's a guy on Jeeps Unlimted that had a shop called Burnsville Offroad build him a 11" lifted WJ. The suspension is all custom, and he's running front and rear Ford 9" axles with 37" MTR's. It's pretty trick. It might just be the biggest WJ yet. There are a few other guys doing the same thing though, but theirs aren't finished yet.

Everytime we see a H1, our hearts bump faster. Yesterday we saw a white H1 coming our way at Squaw Valley ski resort, what a sight! It is 15-20 years old, yet it is still so beautiful, in fact shockingly beautiful. My son called out: "The Big Brother!" I replied: "THE BOSS IS HERE!" If they can make it as nice and comfortable and reliable as H2, I will buy one instantly. My wife and I test drove one when it first came out, but decided it was not something we could live with.

Well, until we "remembered" the H2 was coming out in a form we liked, it was going to be the X5. Even then, it felt like a compromise. None of the new BMW's drive at all like the BMW's of yore (e.g. my beloved 1985 528i, which I had until 1998 and never let me down). Such a bummer.

For now we'd also try and find a 90 and when we can afford it (or when Ford gets an OnStar or Tele-Aid type of device) the Range Rover.

Squaw, MAC? We're so jealous. Run into Shane McConkey?

It was absolutely beautiful powder snow. You could just gently blow the snow off like powder, just like baby powder. On the 2nd day the wind and snow got strong at the peaks, at times we could not see a few feet in front of us. Then it was the perfect time to sit at the Olympic House for a hearty meal and watch the people coming down the slopes from all directions.

My first and only BMW was a new '79 320i, magical drive, driver and car "as one". I always drove pass my home and went around the blocks just a few more times, or got up 3AM to drive down the Pacific coast highway pass the Devil's Slide.

Actually my heart was set on a black EXT, but someone kept putting it down. Good thing in the end the battle stalled us long enough for the H2 to come out.

I really want to get out west this season. Are the reports of little snow widly exaggerated? Any recomendations for late season?

I just received the new H1 brochure from Hummer. If H2 is "like nothing else", H1 is truely "like nothing else".

Driving a Hummer on a ski trip double the pleasure, washing Hummer after snow is double the pain. My 14 yrs old is going up to Northstar next week with all the 8th graders on a school ski trip. We will proberly make just one more ski trip to Squaw later, if you stay at one of the hotels in Squaw, you'll be just steps from the lifts. Snow is great but biz not good at the slopes, rooms are heavily discounted. After that, we'll be in Hawaii for the Spring break, our 12 & 14 yrs old boys also love to surf, too bad we can't ship our Hummer to Hawaii, have to rent one of those Jeeps. We may not be offroaders, we are always chasing after some kind of sport, other family members are flying to Vail CO tomorrow.

I just came back from Whistler and it was spectacular. Anyone into skiing or boarding needs to go there at some point. They are discounting rooms as well, we stayed at place right on the mountain base for cheap.

Anyone been to Whistler and yet thinks there is a better place to ski?

Oh, back to the original topic. H1 hands down. I'm with Mac, if it were a bit more luxurious and comfortable as the H2, I'd buy an H1 instead.

BKLYNH2, about your question on little snow out West, up in Whistler they've had hardly any snow since Christmas and they are struggling this year. But that is relative. It snowed a foot while we were there, and the mountain is covered. Great skiing. What is disappointing to the locals is still a slice of heaven for us North-Easterners.

For jibbing, pipes & off-piste, apparently Mammoth & June mountains are the places to go now, but the elevation is a bit much for me. Almost every pro who freeskis or rides is based out of Mammoth now (Ross Powers, Danny Kass, Kristi Leskinen, JP Auclair, etc). The park & pipe groomer is like a mad scientist, always obsessed with a pristine park.

We'll probably go to Squaw (my desire) or Jackson Hole (Peter).

As for the EXT, I had to call the taste police out on that one and nip it in the bud.

MAC, just hearing you talk about driving the BMW makes me miss mine so much. Maybe I'll get a late 80's 6 series at some point.

2nd Choice....
for off-road capability we were contemplating the Rubicon,
but our requirements were off-road capable off the dealer lot and comfortable for long trips on the interstate,
so...we might have gone with a Range Rover,
or... we could have gone with the Rubicon and towed it behind the Suburban
as you can see, the H2 solved our dilemma.

If only it is trouble free, but what are my chances in getting a perfect one? worth the risk?
