Is there any plan to improve and update H1? I am still very much interested in buying an H1, but the last thing I need is an expensive oil leaking paperweight. I searched high and low, but found nothing on improvement or changes.

I doubt it. With the H2, the SUT, plans for H3 and H4, I bet they're too busy to care.

I don't think they should do any major updates to the H1. If they do, it will just ruin it's character. And then it won't be an H1 anymore, it'll just be an expensive H2.

MAC, why are you so obsessed with getting an H1?

If you want one so bad, just go buy one and make yourself happy. If you don't like it in it's present configuration, then maybe it's not the vehicle for you.

I tend to doubt the H1 will change much. Take a look at these links to see what the military is thinking about for the future.

MAC, arguably they did...it's called the H2. Curious, what would you want to change about the H1?

Mac,

I also drive an 2002 H1, wagon, and there are only a few changes to the 2003. There were also only slight changes from 2001 to 2002. i don't see them changing much at all...

2002 -

Higher Torque Biasing Ratio Differential
New steering wheel hub cover with defined lettering
Revised seatbelts and retractors
Reshaped console in passenger area, adding 4 inches of additional leg room for the right front passenger
New two-piece 17-inch forged aluminum wheel
Express-down driver’s side window
New LED side marker lights
H1 badging
New exterior colors: Firehouse Red (replacing Candy Apple Red) and Klondike Pearl

2003

Optional rear ELocker locking differential from Eaton
Larger radio face with cassettes and single CD slot, and 12-CD changer
New heavy-duty brush guard
New Torque Track 4 or Torque Track 4 - ELocker exterior badging
New exterior colors: Summit Silver and Black Diamond Metallic

MAC, you have to remember the H1 was designed with military use in mind only.
As long as it does what it was intened to do for the original buyer I doubt they will do anything to it to make it more civilianized. That would defeat its military use.
I agree with what Zaging said, they did improve on the H1, its called the H2!

Yes, there will be changes(substantial) to the H1. A friend of mine saw it first hand on a closed trailer. He has been raving about how great it was. I promised not to give away too many details since he wasn't supposed to see it. He did get pics, which I'll get to see very soon.
One thing for you guys- NEW ENGINE. Guess which one. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The original AM General HMMWV was designed to meet a specific government request. Winning that contract meant big money.

Unless there's a similar contract waiting to be snapped up, I can't see AM General investing that kind of R&D money. That's HUGE R&D money.

DRTYFN, can you be any more specific about what you've heard?

Little more news on 2004 H1's that I could find suggests more HP, up 20 I believe to 215HP. Possible Navigation option like H2 and possibility of the windshield being angled back slightly.

Talked with my tech, and he's seen the H1 with a Duramax in it. No, really, he has seen it. If so, I'd be really interested in owning one.

Changing the engine doesn't really add up to a "new & improved H1". I mean, they've already changed the engine about 4 times: normally aspirated Diesel, Gasser, 6.5L TD, Vortec 8100 experiment, etc.

The H1 was designed in the late 70's and it sure feels like it, too. I wouldn't buy an H1 until they redesign the whole thing, which I don't see happening at all. I think the military is much more likely to start replacing many HMMWVs with lightweight dune-buggy type vehicles, and keeping the current HMMWV for medium duty applications. You know what the army needs? Some urban assault tanks like the Israelis have.

Don't get me wrong, I love the H1 -- always have, always wanted one, until the H2 came out, which is better, I think. It says a lot when the H1 lists for $122,500 and sells new for $70,000.

The H1 gets a complete new interior for 04' That is what I am waiting for. A dealer friend of mine in Atlanta said it was great and to wait.

Black H2 Adventure Series + Luxury, AirForce One intake, Throttle Body Bypass, Gobi Rack w/2" Brackets & 4 PIAA 580 Lights, Xenarc HID, Alcoa Wheels, Goodyear 37x12.50x17 MT/R, Warn 9.5Ti Thermometric Winch, DiabloSport programmer,160 Degree T-Stat, 2-7" screens in headrests with DVD player and TV Tuner.

TBarrow, you should probably wait a whole year or so, otherwise you'll pay a $55,000.00 premium.

The leftover 2003's that listed for $122 are selling new for $70! And that was before the new interior news.

DRTYFN your buddy is right. I was just in Indiana last month for trianing and they had a red one with the duramax and alison trany. I started asking about it and nobody there new anything about. As soon as you would go near it they would shoe you away. It only caught my eye because it had a 3in body lift and a 4in exhaust pipe in the wheel well. The truth did finally come out and we wher told to expect some changes. So when it does happen that will be a bad ass rig.

Welcome Neverenuf. Thanks for the backup.

My tech originally saw it in early summer in a enclosed transport truck on it's way to the Seattle area for some suspension component fitting. He said it looked great. He has also since seen it back in Indiana when he was there for training.
I seem to remember him saying the body was put together differntly. Like less rivets or something.
I hate diesel fumes, but I might be swayed by that rig.

Er.. that refers to a "LIGHT Tactical" vehicle. NOT a replacement for the HMMWV.
