I am looking at purchasing a 2003 H1 soft top and I am concerned about the noise. I have a H2 now that's pretty quite. Any input would be appreciated. I have not had a chance to drive one because I am negociating with an out of state owner

It is not as bad as you would think. The only time that it really gets loud is when the fan kicks on. I am using MTR's on my truck and those tires are really quiet.

I have an 03 open top... no comparison to the H2... any rag top will be noisier than the SUV... it all depends on what YOU want to drive.

noise. Thanks for getting back to me on the noise question. Now I need to decide if 67K is a deal for a 2003 soft top.

I just went through the same process. 67,000 is all the money from a dealer. My local dealer had an 03 with 14,000 miles, white, great condition, asking price was 67,950, he came down to 62,500. I found a 03 black diamond, leather, winch, locking rear diff. 5,000 miles, perfect condition for 60000. I also looked at a handfull of other H1's from beaters, to fair condition, prices vary widely.

Thanks guys. I did find a soft top with 15K miles. Never off road and in great shape. I did offer 60K for the truck, but don't know if it will be accepted. Anyway, I have plenty of time. Thanks again.

Put it this way. I have heard many people say they can tell when the fan kicks on but I was always confused because I thought that fan was on all the time. Turns out the fan is always spinning but only when it receives power wil you hear it. It is very hard to discribe but it will get loud, and that is my guess on when the fan kicks on.

The fan will kick in when underhood temps plus coolant temps consistently go over 225 or so.

When the fan kicks off, a bi-metal strip and viscous coupling clutch will begin to make the fan go as fast as the crankshaft speed goes. It will vary fan speed as needed, making it go slower if needed.

The sound is equivalent (with the newer 8 bladed fan) to a light jet taking off in the distance. The older 10 bladed fans pushed more air through, but the noise made it sound like a jet engine was throttling up inside your engine compartment. Newer trucks (97 and up) will have the latest fan. The service bulletin came out in early 1998.
