Not that any of you care...but I am putting some serious thought into picking up a new FJ Cruiser when they come out this spring. $25k is the edge of what I can afford...but I bet I could still make Moab and the Rubicon this year. After all...what's the point of buying a new truck if I can't use it to put you all in your place? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't know if I'd use >, but theres a real good chance that it will be a great truck. When I got my H3 I was coming from a 4Runner, which was a great truck for what it was.

My short list was the H3 and the FJ. The things that killed the FJ were:

Only 2 primary doors (no good for an adult w/kids)
and
Not Available yet...

You're young and don't have kids (AFAIK) so 2 doors won't be an issue, and you've got the time to wait, which I didn't.

My guess is that if you want one you better get in line soon, there may be a wait list.

I went down to the stealership last night. They said they have 17 people on the list, but that they expect to get a lot more than that. Also, I am not really looking to grab one from the first shipment. If I have to wait a month or 2...oh well.

Probably won't have it in time for Moab. I really need to sell my 240sx first for the down payment, but I don't want to do that until I see one in person to make sure I really want it. Which would leave about 2 weeks to sell the car, and buy the FJ in order to get it to Moab.

I have owned many yotas and have liked them all. The only problem I have with the new FJ is that it looks like an blown up version of the minicooper.

I think that the FJ would make one hell of a dive vehicle though.

265/70/17 is 31.6 inches. Most 32's are about the same from what I remember. Also, I will be going from open diff's with 31's, to 1 locker and 1 limited slip with 32's (about). I think I should be good for a while. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The FJ was on my list too, but once I drove the H3, I didn't feel like waiting. I also didn't like the interior on the FJ compared to the H3. But I think it will be a nice little truck, and at around 25K its a decent price.

BTW, they show 5 colors on the Toyota website - titanium, black, black cherry (WTF, looks purple) yellow, and blue.

I plan on waiting until at least summer to avoid the rush and more importantly to wait for the special off-road edition. I've heard it will not only have BFG AT's, different colors, and different suspension but that it will have lower gearing, worth waiting for IMO. They haven't officially named it but rumor is it could be named the FJC "MOAB".

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">IL EXCLUSIVE: Special-Edition Toyota FJ Cruiser in the Works
Date posted: 12-14-2005

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Toyota is planning a mid-summer launch of a special-edition 2007 FJ Cruiser sport-utility vehicle that is beefed up with off-road performance features, Inside Line has learned.

"Look for things like shocks, tires, wheels, and off-road performance features," said Mark Amstock, Toyota's national truck and SUV market planning manager here at the launch of the FJ Cruiser on Tuesday.

Amstock said Toyota is working with tire manufacturer BFGoodrich on the yet unnamed special-edition FJ Cruiser. He added that Toyota designers are "pushing for traditional FJ colors, including tans and reds."

The Japanese automaker is also considering an FJ model without the signature white roof — a feature which will be standard at the SUV's launch — as well as a convertible version. "We're giving that a lot of thought," Amstock said in regard to a topless FJ Cruiser. "But nothing specific yet."

The FJ Cruiser, priced in the mid-$20Ks, is set to make its debut in late March. It competes against the Hummer H3, the Jeep Wrangler and the Nissan Xterra.

Amstock said Toyota will export a few of the FJ Cruisers to Canada and 183 to the Middle East. He said there are no plans for a right-hand-drive version of the vehicle or a diesel version.

What this means to you: Toyota aims to defy every inch of the Rubicon Trail with its special-edition FJ Cruiser. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

If you are willing to come to Los Angeles area, I can forward you the contact info of the guy I am getting mine from. Straight shooter, no BS kinda guy. It will be full MSRP, no discount, no mark-up.

I just ran into the guy while I was picking up my minivan at service dept this morning. He told me there are 80+ on the waiting list and he's only getting 50 or so on the first shipment (Feb/Mar) and second shipment won't be until May or June. So if you contact him soon, I guess you can get yours in May or June.

Here are some pics I found online, it's definitely no H2 or H3 but I think it will be a fun SUV http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The FJ was in Walden Colorado up by Rocky Mt. NP last Saturday. If you want to see it in action it will be at Cruise Moab in May and at the Colorado Toy Rally in August.

When seeing it in person it was a lot bigger than I thought it was and as for off-road protection it's got rock rails, skid plates and more ground clearance than an H3.

I saw an H3 in the parking lot yesterday and no offense but those rear shock mounts have got to be one of the worst designs I have seen on an off-road rig, it looks like they hang almost lower than the pumpkin. Do any of you guys ever have problems getting them hung up on rocks?

I like this truck. For the money, I think it could be a lot of fun. I've always been a Yota fan though.

Its got a strong engine and good DNA to start with. With a lift and some tires, I think you could take it quite a few places and still have under 25K invested.

The value of your house? What does the value of your house have to do with buying the truck? Please don't tell me you were trying to use your home equity to buy the truck.

Yes I was trying to use equity to buy the truck. So what? Can't afford 27k over 6 years, but I can afford 27k over 30. More expensive in the long run, but cheaper now. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Too bad the Lender told the Appraiser to lowball me, so he cut 20k off of the value of my house. Oh well.

You don't need a new truck that bad. I'm honestly happy for you that the appraisal came in low.

The problem with that is that you would end up stacking debt. Since the truck won't last the 30 years, you'll acquire additional debt sometime in the future for another vehicle and still be making payments on this one and then again and then again.

Taking away money or value from a solid asset and putting into a depreciating asset ( vehicle) and tack on interest taxable or not . Is not a good idea, unless you write the truck off as a business expense which I don't the FJ fits ( I dont think is GVWR is 6000LBS)the bill for that. And most home equity loans are variable so the interest will continue to rise, taking more money out of your pocket and out of the value of your home as time goes on.

Pay the $350 again and get another appraisal from a different company.

Just kidding I know exactly what you are going threw as I'm facing the same thing (different reason). I know it's not intentional the appraiser goes back to their office and does a comp appraisal of several properties that are in the same area and are close to the same sq footage.

Have you looked at regular financing and maybe get a co-sign? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>My credit isnt the issue. I pay too much a month on my current mortgage to afford a $400 car payment. I could always take on a roommate so their rent covers the truck payment, but that is risky.

This may not be enough but if $400 is too much, how bout $365?

$25k loan, 7 yr, 5.99%, $365 per month

If disciplined taking an equity line (not equity loan) out isnt a bad way of paying for a vehicle. As long as you take the necessary steps of making the monthly payment as if it were a regular car loan. This also then enables you to deduct the interest annualy which you paid on the loan (not allowed on conventional car loans). If done properly and wisely it is simple and quite cost effective.
