I'm dreaming of a big plate of kim chee tako poke, aren't you? Yumbo!

Start with a fresh tako (Hawai'ian word for octopus).

Do lots of interesting stuff to it then add seaweed, Japanese red pepper sauce, sea salt and a few other mystery ingredients and you get ...

OMG, this stuff is so good! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Best to eat it fresh out of the fridge and on the beach.

Ducks beak, eh? I gotta thing about that one.

Damn!

I like to eat that stuff...but fried. I have never tried it while it naked...looking back at me...you know - with all those weird suction cups on there...Ahk. What does it taste like rodster?

rodster

What's it taste like? Hmmm. Tough to describe.

When mixed with the other stuff (BTW, poke [po-key like hokey] means, roughly, mixed-up in HI) it's spicy and full of flavor. When cooked and plain, it's pretty plain.

Don't eat it without cooking -- kinda like chewy loogies, all slippery and slimy.

Some of the legs of the octupus above got chopped and made into poke. Other legs were marinated then BBQed whole. Drop a whole leg on your plate and now you're talking about tentacles looking back at ya!

You pick mushrooms in the wild? I guess you have to know what you're doing so you don't end up eating a belly full of psilocybin. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

VT, try this one. I'm sitting at a restaurant waiting for my meal and out comes a lobster on a platter. Think this sounds good, huh? So did I until I realized when they set it down at the table next to me that it's tail had been twisted completely around, cut open and the damn thing was still clawing at the people while they ate it!! Sushi is one thing but that's ridiculous.

I lost my appetite.

Whassup cousin? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No, I'm not kama'aina -- just a simple haole boy with kama'aina tastes and a love for the beach and people of Waimanalo. (Shima's makes the best poke!) We come down for two weeks twice a year.

Discovered last year that I may have very distant family on Molokai. Seems a whaler, possibly from my bloodline and with the same last name, ended up on Oahu in the early 1800s and married a local girl. Some time later the family moved to Molokai. One of the cousins (George) made a big name for himself in the 70s when he mysteriously died while working to return Kahoolawe to Hawaii. Ring any bells? We haven't yet confirmed the family connection 'cause early records from the islands are pretty scarce.

The March '05 tako picture was taken on Molokai. I speared that guy and one other while free diving on the reef. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yes, the family name definitely rings a bell. A prominent family for sure. So, who do you know on Molokai? I have family and friends there as well. Chances are we know the same folks since the island only has about 6K peeps.

I visited a few places in Europe while in the service and unfortunately (sort of), it's pretty much the same story with each: I don't remember the place but I do remember the drink. Go figure.

Maybe some day I'll go back and try it all while lucid. I'm not sure that time is now, though, especially to Rome. Too much talk of terrorism there for my taste. But that's just me so if that's where you're headed, have fun! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
