question for those of you in the know about H1's. The 03 is still a underpowered dog correct? Not as bad as say the 97's but it doesn't have the powerplant of the Alpha? Or am I completely off base? Short of changing a motor can anything be done to pep it up? Or when you buy an H1 you resolve yourself to the scenario of the turtle the hair (it's not how fast you get there but the journey)

The price seams ok any other know issues with the 03-H1's

It's funny how people want an 8000 lb truck that was designed and geared to go 55mph in a convoy to go faster. It was designed to carry large payloads and people anywhere a tank could go.

Speed-wise, I don't think there's much difference between a 97 and an 03(except one block doesn't crack). As Phil said, all the turbo-diesels are pretty much the same. But does it really matter if your 0 to 60mph is 16 seconds or 19 seconds? Slow is slow. The duramax helps a bit, but it's still connected to a truck that was designed to go 55.

H1's are not meant to go fast. Remember the tranny/t-case/geared hubs are set up to work best at certain speeds. The GM 6.5's max sustained rpm is something like 2400rpm (on my truck - '97td - is about 65 mph). Besides, get heavy on the pedal and you'll need an air tanker to re-fuel ya on the hwy. Brakes aren't the best either. But, take one off road and you'll see why they are so fun.

I'm NOT hoping for fast, not hoping to get pinned in the seat with acceleration but the pig has to get out of its own way. It has to be able to merge on to the frw at frw speeds.

I took a test drive in one (01)a couple a weeks ago and nearly got killed trying to get onto the frw because I under estimated the lack of throttle response.

55 in a world of posted speed limits 65-75 just will not cut it.

But thanks for the info.

My '02 could get up to around 70 (eventually...) -- but with the ride and the noise, I never wanted to keep it there for very long.

Another thing to mention is that from '03 on standard maintenance while under warranty is included.

Without even knowing it I got my truck up to 80mph without a problem.

As for merging onto a freeway I have never had a problem unless some ass decided to stop at the end of an on ramp only to try to merge on from a standstill. If someone on the freeway decided to speed up so you could not merge then your are going to get that no matter where you are or what you are driving. Throttle response is to be expected but my on ramps are looooooong so merging hasn't been much of an issue.

Not exactly a voice to go with the photos, and a bottle of lubricant for your axle. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You know what's sad is how someone only drove this ALPHA for 12,--- miles. I think this would be a 250,000 mile vehicle, maybe more if I had it. Just my opinion though.
