A New York City college is under fire for honoring a former student who happens to be a fugitive from justice.

The Daily News reported Monday that police groups are angered that the City College of New York has allowed a community center on its Manhattan campus to carry the name of convicted cop killer and domestic "terrorist" Assata Shakur (javascript:siteSearch('Assata Shakur');)....

In 2005, the FBI named Shakur, whose real name is Joanne Deborah Chesimard (javascript:siteSearch('Joanne Deborah Chesimard');), to its list of most wanted domestic terrorists, placing a $1 million bounty on her head...

In 1977, Shakur was convicted of the 1973 murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster during a routine traffic stop. Shakur had been a member of the Black Liberation Army (javascript:siteSearch('Black Liberation Army');) and was wanted in connection with several felonies, including bank robbery, the FBI said.

She skipped out on the life sentence, escaping from prison in Clinton, N.J., on Nov. 2, 1979. She's now believed to be living in Cuba.

The Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Community Center on the CCNY campus was named in 1989, the paper reported. It is shared by three groups: Students for Educational Rights, the Student Liberation Action Movement and Dominicans 2000.

Guillermo Morales (javascript:siteSearch('Guillermo Morales');), also exiled in Cuba, is a former member of FALN (javascript:siteSearch('FALN');), a Puerto Rican liberation group that claimed responsibility for a rash of bombings in New York in the mid-1970s.I'm pretty pissed!!!

I know this may sound like an odd question but what is she being honoured for? Isn't there normally a reason to be honoured? Did she discover a cure for cancer while running from justice? Has she solved world hunger while hiding in Cuba? On another note, how the hell did she escape? That shouldn't happen ever.

If that made you amd, read this garbage:

I love how they say she was stopped for DWB, even tho the tailight of their car was out and how she was "cowardly" shot in the back even tho she and her accomplices opened fire on the police officers.

As a peace officer, I always ask my victims to turn around so I can shoot them in the back. It's one of the things they train us to do in "Oppressive Police School" along with racial profiling and searching without cause.:giggling:

Seriously, I have been blessed in my career in that I have never had to discharge my weapon at a suspect, although I've drawn numerous times when appropriate for my protection. I've never come under fire either. Canada has less gun crime than the States although we have more guns per capita but our firearms are almost exclusively long arms (rifles and shotguns).

I'm going to go read through that link and see what this... person... did to deserve to be honoured. Then I'm headed into town to have coffee with Dennis.

From reading that, it sounds like she should be tried for treason since she was at war with the USA. I'm really glad Canada hasn't had the same kind of racial problems as the States. Who needs the stress?

Starbucks?

BTW, what's wrong with profiling? White guy driving a BMW cruising through the drug and prostitute ridden streets of (pick a city) should be pulled over and checked out. Just like a black guy cruising a predominently wealthy 'hood driving an '84 Caprice 4 door riding on deuce-deuces.

How about a Muslim sitting in a van at the end of an airport runway? And a group of Asians sitting outside the pound wanting to adopt half-a-dozen cats?:giggling:

Profiling can be part of good police work but it's only the beginning. The hard work comes afterward.

If it gets that far. Nothing frosts me worse than having a prosecutor deal away charges for a next-to-nothing plea... or having them can good charges because the guy went into rehab... or...

I think the best (read: worst) one I ever dealt with was a guy I stopped for a traffic infraction who lied to me about his name because he was a prohibited driver. My 'spidey sense' was working overtime so I kept questioning him at the roadside. After catching him in a couple of inconsistent answers, he admitted he was using his brother's name so I arrested him for misdemeanor impersonation. The prosecutor tossed the charge because she felt that being caught and admitting his guilt was disincentive enough so he would never offend again.

Anything less than death is not enough for that piece of trash.
We haven't had capitol punishment for civilians since (going on memory) 1976 thanks to our worst Prime Minister of all time, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The worst Pickton will get is life in prison... if he's convicted.
