US First Lady Laura Bush said she first thought a sore on her right shin that turned out to be skin cancer was an insect bite.
Mrs Bush has told the CBS TV program Face the Nation it never occurred to her to make public what she thought was a very minor insect bite.
She said she had a biopsy done before the November election, which found to be a malignant squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer.
Mrs Bush said she had it removed after the recent election and said she hoped the publicity surrounding her ordeal would prompt people to pay closer attention to possible signs of cancer.
She blamed the cancer on the hot west Texas sun and her fair complexion.
