View Full Version : Random Honking Noise

First off, I love this H2, I think I will own at least one from now on.

I really can't think of any other way to describe this.

I just got my new 06 Lux, there is a noise that sounds like a small cars horn, happens under normal acceleration and varies in length. It can also do it randomly under braking, but almost always when accelerating.

I am going to take it to the dealership, but I was hoping that someone might know what this is, so I don't have to wait for them to track down the problem.

I have searched the forums using just about any combo of words I could think of, please help.

That would be the sound of the almighty Prius you just squashed. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Seriously, I have no idea. Has anything been installed by you or the dealer?

Nevermind, that's an inside joke that with only 2 posts you won't get.

Sorry, I don't know. Maybe someone will advise you on Busy Forum Monday. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

This sounds absolutely bizarre. How loud is it? Does it sound like your horn when you press it...you know the stock horn is pretty whimpy, like a small car's horn? Where is the sound emanating from?

I would suspect something loose that vibrates when the engine is under load.. possibly a harmonic of the engine load causing the vibration when de-accelerating.(sp?)

I would get it to the dealer before something gets worse.

My family had a '76 Chevy Van, and it has a loose wire - every time we hit a bump it beeped! It was funny as hell. One night it woke us all up with the horn coming on out of no where - snip - problem gone. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have that noise, too. I have searched high and low trying to figure out what the phuck it is. I think it's suspension related from the occurences, but I can't tell. It's more of a squeak/honk kind of sound. Maybe it's a worn out bushing somewhere.

Check your primary and secondary serpentine belts. The tensioner may be going out on either one of those, causing unusual wear on the belts, and causing the sound under engine rev, and deceleration.
Just an idea!

My H2 has less than 1000 miles on it. I wouldn't think anything would be worn at this point. I do thank everyone for thier opions...keep them coming.

James Hell, I'd take it to the dealer, get a nice loaner and let them worry about. It's still under warranty right?

Just make sure you let us know what it was. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Man am I glad to hear I'm not going crazy. I hear the same sound too. If the dealer finds out what it is, I'd sure like to know.

I have been searching with no luck as well! It does sound like a very faint horn when on the gas.

Is yours an 06?

Mine's an 06 with 2000 miles on it. Sounds to me like its coming from behind me.

Just a thought...Does your's have the DVD system in the headrest? Just had mine installed and can't remember if the sound started after the install.

Mine does have the factory DVD system in the headrests. Ill try keeping the stereo off to see if the sound is coming from the speakers.

x2 on the Prius http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously though...

Is it more like a whine thats engine speed based, not vehicle speed based?

If so, I'd look at the radio or DVD players. I'm no electronics expert so this is a guess, but I have heard that if the ground is not good you can get this sort of feedback.

Again this is a wild ass guess, so good luck.

I tried with the stereo on or off and it didnt make a difference.

It seems as if the sound only comes on when I depress the pedal a certain amount. If I leave the pedal depressed at the point when the sounds starts, I can keep it going. However, if I let up or press a little more it goes away.

The noise is your rear control arms. the bushings were redesigned for 2006 and make the noise. Gm has redesigned them(again) and the new ones are much better(quieter)

Is there a service bulletin or anything that I can show the dealership?

No bulletins at this time. have the dealer listen to the rear lower control arm bushings when doing a hard launch. What dealer did you take it to originally?

I've had the same sound, usually when I am accelerating in a turn, and mine is an '05. It's not the DVD in the headrest either because mine doesn't have that.

I've refrained from taking mine to the dealership with this problem knowing that I would really get the infamous service department comment, "Dumb woman...blonde one at that!":o
