Anyone have one and on a machine? Not breathing good at night and going in next month to a sleep clinic.

thanks, wife says i quit breathing in between snoring:crying:
What do you need to know?
Take your own pillow, I didn't for the first one and it stunk.
Before the test they'll hook you up to a ton of wires and you'll look pretty goofy. The gummy stuff they use on your head to hold the electrodes is nasty and you'll want to shower before doing anything the next day. Take a hat.
At a certain point during your sleep you'll be woken and hooked up to a CPAP. During this time they'll adjust the pressure in an attempt to find out what pressure works best for you. You may not sleep well during this time so make the next day's schedule accordingly.
You may not like the mask they put on you, I didn't so I didn't sleep much at all. Before the insurance company would pay for the machine, I had to go back for another study to make sure the CPAP would work for me.
For the second study I was prepared with my own mask by going to the doctor and being fitted for it ahead of time. Things went much better and everything was satisfied for the insurance company.
It's been close to a month now and I'm getting pretty used to it, sleeping almost the entire night with it on. When I do, I get a hell of a lot of things done around the house because I'm full of energy. My eyes aren't red and the bags are mostly gone now.
I have this one with a humidifier.

Don't be afraid you'll get the one at the sleep center. The one's they use are big and ugly. Noisier, too.
thanks, wife says i quit breathing in between snoring:crying:I did, too. The sleep center said I "woke up" 24 times an hour. It's less than half that now. Furhter pressure adjustments may happen in the future.
Another plus to the study was the discovery that I have RLS. That's been stopped with Miraplex.

Tell your wife to stop putting the pillow on your face.:clapping:
Have you tried Breath Rite nose strips? Could be as simple as that. Hopefully it doesn't require surgery.

Thanks alot. Have done strips and snore stop for months with little help. it gets worse with time and I find myslef waking up and sleeping light. i use to do the log thing with tons of energy. Red eyes, some bags, so I know I need help. The old man was thin and did the same thing so I know it's more then the tonage. How did your wife react to the noise of the machine?
Have you tried Breath Rite nose strips? Could be as simple as that. Hopefully it doesn't require surgery.I did and they didn't help at all. The problem is soft tissue at the back of the throat falls down and blocks the air passage causing you to stop breathing.
used2sell, also consider getting a battery back-up. A woman died a few months ago when the power went out and she couldn't breath. I'm pretty sure she had a full-face mask, tho. Mine just covers the nose.

How did your wife react to the noise of the machine?
She tries to smother me with the pillow also.
It might require corrective surgery. But maybe Ken has a better explanation.
How did your wife react to the noise of the machine? The tonnage doesn't help, however, I lost 40lbs, to a normal weight, and still did it.
The noise isn't a problem. It's very rythmic.
The problem was me getting used to it, always moving around. Sometimes I'd take it off and leave the machine on. That's pretty loud. When the mask is on you, it's very quiet.

It might require corrective surgery. But maybe Ken has a better explanation.I inquired about the surgery because I had no problem with doing it, but I was told it's only effective in a relatively small percentage. Of that number, a large percentage relapse. I don't know why.
I have a relative that's an example of that and now has to take another test to get the machine.

The above that Ken wrote is correct...just remember everyone is different...i went to the V.A. for my study (i was snooring so loud i woke myself up), i remember them telling me that i stopped breathing many times...
To me the BIG thing is the correct mask...they first did the nasal tubes, they SUCK and it doesn't even feel good...then they gave me a soft side nasal mask, only problem is its very comfortable but now i'm breathing through my mouth which defeats the mask...
next week i'm going in to be fitted for a FULL FACE MASK,hopefully that that will solve it...
losing weight is suppose to help but not in every case...surgury i would avoid until you have tried EVERYTHING else...you may be fine with the idea BUT...can cause other problems...
good luck...
RYD, they put the nasal tubes on me first and I wasn't comfortable.
During the second study, I tried a full face-mask because I was opening my mouth also, but I nearly freaked out and took it off before the technician could even get back to his computer. I put mine back on. Gawd I hated that one.
I was doing a pretty good job with keeping my mouth closed after using the machine for a couple of weeks, but the wife got me a chin-strap that works great. You can still open your mouth if you really want to, but it stays shut otherwise.
Now I put the chinstrap on, then the mask. I'll tell you one thing, it's beeatch getting those on after a night of drinking. I think it took me 10 minutes Saturday night.:o :D

FWIW- I think the mask is sexy, it's kinda like I'm fuggin Darth Vader.:dancingbanana:
I noticed Ken stopping breathing and bucking for air often at night. It scared me to the point that I was staying up worrying about him. Not to mention the large snort (not a typo) when he finally came to finally breathe in- scared the crap out of me. It sounded like some sort of devil pig.:D His eyes were always red and he had bags and was pretty tired all day. I have been waiting for him to get all this done for years.
Anyway, the CPAP has helped, his eyes are white and no bags. He gets up earlier and gets more done during the day. The machine just has a low hum and you can hear the exhale, but at least I know he is breathing. :)
The amount of oxygen lost during sleep apnea is scary. Like Ken said, bring your own pillow to the study, my Dad took some Benedryll before hand also. It is awkward falling asleep with cameras on you and all the sensors.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Good luck on the study. My docs have been trying to get me to do a study for years now. I'm still holding out, and not sleeping too much consequently. Oh, and if you really want to get some rest, take the ambien, but make sure to ask for a .5 MG. of Xanax too. It'll help with the anxiety of the test ya know!:o

Pfft... ambien... xanax... what ever happened to good old drinking yourself to sleep or abusing animal tranquilizers?? You new age hippies...
On a side note... when sleeping pills say non-habit forming and so on, they really mean, good luck sleeping without these from now on.
I started taking them to adjust my sleep schedule about a year ago and ended up taking them every night just to get to sleep. But they made me quite drowzy during the day. I recently stopped taking them. The first 10 days or so, I'd get to bed around 1am and just lay there until 9 or 10am without being able to sleep a wink. That continued until I was able to finally fall asleep after laying there for 5-6hrs and slowly got better. A month after I stopped, I'm finally back to normal!

Pfft. You were just taking the wrong stuff DEI. What you need is 300mg of Seroquel along with 1mg of Xanax XR. Just remember, those things will kill you. I've had people all over my ass for months about getting blood work done. Again. I love it, I'm 22 and people are freaking out about my bloodsugar, diabetes, and all that other crap. But it helps me sleep, a little.

seeing that needles are not a part of it, I want to look into it more.

seeing that needles are not a part of it, I want to look into it more. Not sure about your insurance coverage or anything like that, but I just went to a Pulminary Specialist doc who then referred me to the study center which took a month to get into. Then took the study, waited a few weeks to see the doctor again, then was referred back to the study center about a month later for the second test. Then a few weeks after that I met with the specialist again.
There are relatively few beds for this testing, but more are being added. The specialist team I went to is actually building their own center in their building. That's drastically reduce the wait time.

Diet can only help so much. I was never "fat", but was quite heavy. I'm a big guy anyway. I lost 40 lbs and things did improve, but nothing was cured.

make sure its the right size for your height and weight...

What you can do is put it in your mouth first to warm it up. You know bring it up to 98.6 F, it will be more comfortable that way...
